BC election: my independent gal lost by TWO VOTES

Lest you think it doesn’t matter if you vote or not:  as I mentioned before the BC election, I was going to vote for the independent candidate rather than the other left wing Green, NDP, or Liberal candidates.  My independent candidate Vicky Huntington lost by two votes to the Liberal

I also mentioned how voter turnout is low in BC at the best of times.  Voter turnout was eight percentage points lower still, this time.

As I said before the election, “It really doesn’t matter who wins.  And it’s no wonder the polls—varied as they are—predict such a close race; and voter turnout barely scrapes the 50% level as nearly half of voters stay home, shrug, and intone, “what’s the difference, they’re all socialists”.”

Take the hint, conservatives.

EXTRA DAH
And here’s a hint for pinhead politicians and voter-turnout analysts:

In the midst of a recession, as reported today in the news after it’s already been done, Vicky Huntington’s hometown of Delta, where she used to be a council member, just voted unanimously to give themselves a 15% raise.  And also to increase their monthly vehicle allowance by $200 per month.

The poor politicians.  They haven’t had a raise since the last time they voted to give themselves a raise, which was nearly 16 months ago, when they voted to give themselves a 13% raise

At least they’re not a corporation.  Imagine the heat the media would put on them.  And the government know-it-alls like Delta council.  (Actually, ironically, Delta is not a “city”, it’s officially called “The Corporation of Delta”.  So say it with me!  Damn those “corporations”!)

But don’t worry.  “As a cost-cutting measure, and to keep the municipal portion of the residential property tax increase just below four per cent, 22 civic positions were axed earlier this year to save $1.5 million from the payroll,” according to the Delta Optimist, a CanWest newspaper, which apparently had absolutely no questions for the politicians about this superb decision-making with our tax dollars during a recession the likes of which they love to compare to The Great Depression.  The intrepid reporters at the Delta Optimist simply quoted the politicians explain it away.  For example, “It’s only reasonable…”, according to one esteemed councillor.

Good luck with that next election.
