GOVT FAILURE du JOUR (3.) Non-governmental car company, FORD, posts profit in “worst year since…”
...since, why since the beginning of the end of the last ice age! And certainly since President Obama (as he’s told us 8,733,954 times now in that may telepromptered speeches) “inherited” a “near catastrophe” which was “the worst since the great depression” from “the previous administration”... in which he “saved or created”, um “2 million jobs”... (yadda… bullcrap…)...
Ford, being the big-three automaker that did NOT accept any bailout, and which was NOT taken over by the Obama government.
Ford posts $2.7 billion profit
Ford Motor Co. generated a surprising $2.7 billion profit last year and is now poised to perform even better in the wake of the extraordinary quality-control difficulties afflicting Japan’s Toyota, the world’s largest automaker. ...

GOVT FAILURE du JOUR (2.) Study shows govt bans on cell phone use —utterly no use.
Government regulations fail…. Must spend more money! Start a national program! “Educate” the people! “Invest” in “road safety”! Only the government can save us!
Study: Distracted driving laws don’t stop crashes
The Associated Press
Date: Saturday Jan. 30, 2010 12:04 PM ETWASHINGTON — A new insurance industry study has found that state laws banning the use of handheld devices to make calls or send text messages while driving have not resulted in fewer vehicle crashes.
The study, released Friday by the Highway Loss Data Institute, examined insurance claims from crashes before and after such bans took effect in California, New York, Connecticut and Washington, D.C.
The organization found that claims rates did not go down after the laws were enacted. It also found no change in patterns compared with nearby states without such bans.
Adrian Lund, the group’s president, said the finding doesn’t bode well “for any safety payoff from all the new laws.” ...

GOVT FAILURE du JOUR (1.) About that “freeze” Obama promised, and I warned you to laugh at…
Bringing new meaning to the term “out of control government spending”...
Senate OKs new debt limit, raised by $1.9 trillion
The all-Democrat vote will boost the U.S. government’s borrowing power to a staggering $14.3 trillion, coming a day after Obama called on Congress to freeze much non-defense spending.Acknowledging that the U.S. must continue to borrow to keep the government open, Senate Democrats on Thursday pushed through a $1.9 trillion increase in the nation’s debt limit.
The vote, along partisan lines, will boost the government’s total borrowing power to a staggering $14.3 trillion.
Just a day after President Obama called on Congress to freeze much non-defense spending in future years, Senate Democrats turned back a bipartisan amendment to the debt-ceiling bill that would limit all future domestic discretionary spending - in both defense and social programs - to 2 percent annual increases. ...

The self-anointed Mr. Respect, Michael Ignatieff, once again refers to Prime Minister as “this guy”
IRONY: He was talking about — no he was whining about — Prime Minister Harper’s “respect for institutions” in light of Prime Minister Harper’s new appointments to the Senate, claiming that Harper is showing “disrespect” for the institution called the Senate.
Stay “respectful”, Ignatieff.
”... These attacks on the senate showed a flagrant disrespect for an institution! ... instead of respecting the second chamber ... this guy said we’ve gotta have these crime bills! .... It shows disrespect for our institutions! .... and I think it says a lot aboat his respect for our institutions! ...”

HOW YOU KNOW “man made global warming” advocacy has jumped the shark: Al Qaeda’s on board!
Our friend Steve Milloy, the junk science debunker, punches in with a goodie today on his GreenHellBlog.com blog:
Al-Qaeda goes Al-Gore-a?
January 29, 2010From the Associated Press:
Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden has called in a new audiotape for the world to boycott American goods and the U.S. dollar, blaming the United States and other industrialized countries for global warming.
In the tape, aired in part on Al-Jazeera television Friday, bin Laden warns of the dangers of climate change and says that the way to stop it is to bring “the wheels of the American economy” to a halt.
He says the world should “stop consuming American products” and “refrain from using the dollar,” according to a transcript on Al-Jazeera’s Web site.
The new message, whose authenticity could not immediately be confirmed, comes after a bin Laden tape released last week in which he endorsed a failed attempt to blow up an American airliner on Christmas Day.
The AP could not confirm the rumor that Al Qaeda will soon launch an Al-Gore-a division to lobby for cap-and-trade.
Also see Milloy’s “Look who’s for cap-and-trade…” (complete with pictures!). Your own list would include the usual cabal of progressives like the you’ve got to be kidding party’s Jack Layton, The Liberals’ Michael Ignatieff, and amongst you realists, possibly even the progressive Conservative Party’s leader Stephen Harper. But they all share something in common with…

Left-wing Che Guevara t-shirt-wearing idiots? Hi there. Meet Glenn Beck.
I found another good link for the three dozen of you who still don’t have Fox News Channel and may be forced to only watch liberalvision like CBC or CTV or CNN, and are thus woefully under-informed or misinformed about, well, nearly everything. This must be very embarrassing for you. The rest of us already know Fox News is far the best channel available in Canada.
http://www.watchglennbeck.com/
Make sure you watch the special show from January 22. It’s not his usual show. It’s his first documentary-style feature. And next time one of your pals (or left-wing Vancouver city councilors**) wears one of those asinine Che Guevara — the communist murderer — t-shirts that so many idiot leftists (or simple ignorants) wear, you’ll likely find new pals.
Which reminds me of my last trip that I’ll ever make to a well-known Flag Shop owned by a well-known Liberal Party supporter, when I went to get a new Canadian flag. Therein, they had all sorts of flags displayed which they’d made…. including one of Che Guevara. I don’t know why they made that flag, but there it was, hanging right above the cash desk at The Flag Shop, along with other flags. Isn’t that weird?
** The left-wing Vancouver city councillor was the idiot Tim Loius, who I wrote about here, back in 2005. (I don’t mean to blithely name-call. It’s simply important to inform you that Tim Louis is an actual political idiot). My blog entry wasn’t about the fact that he wore his Che Guevara t-shirt to the election night victory party, but rather it was on the occasion of his grand and ever so noble demand that the city open a new government-owned and government-run not-for-profit brothel, “to help drug-addicted prostitutes”.
He ran for city council under the banner of the “Committee of Progressive Electors”. He is, I think, a communist. And by the way, just to continue connecting the dots here, that “Committee of Progressive Electors” party is the same banner under which Libby Davies, currently an MP under the you’ve got to be kidding party of Jack Layton, sat as a Vancouver city councillor, for many years. Her husband at that time —yes, husband, not wife —was, I’m pretty sure, a communist. He also sat on city council. Same with Svend Robinson, the convicted jewel thief formerly of the you’ve got to be kidding party, who got caught stealing a ring for his boyfriend worth roughly the same as a BMW. These are the same people who want you to plug your kids into a national government-run socialist daycare (and “early learning” — wink!) institution. And legalize prostitution. And pot smoking. They’re “progressives”.

Former Democratic Party adviser: Obama’s new “jobs package is oxymoronic”
Dick Morris, former top Clinton adviser, today in his column “THE STATE OF THE UNION: A HOLLOW SPEECH”:
“The very notion of a ‘jobs package’ that underpins Obama’s newly announced program is oxymoronic. The president still seems not to have grasped the essential point that borrowing money to spend it to create jobs in fact costs jobs. Or that increasing the deficit decreases the opportunities for businesses and consumers to borrow and cuts the number of jobs.”
Joel Johannesen, top conservative adviser (one of approximately fourteen in Canada): When watching circus clowns and magicians and politicians and other tricksters, always watch the OTHER hand. This so-called “jobs package” is nothing more than another grammatical sleight of hand, almost identical in quality to the left-wing’s hysterical switch in terminology from “man-made global warming” to the less pathetic “climate change”. Let’s understand: “Jobs package” = “Stimulus Package Attempt Number Two” (Attempt Number One now finally being tacitly acknowledged as having been an utter failure of mammoth, TRILLION-dollar magnitude, and of untold lost opportunity).
UPDATE 2:20 PM
Glenn Beck is also watching the other hand, and mentioned this quote from a Democrat on today’s show:

KNOW YOUR TERRORISTS—Obama confidant/union boss on senators who disagree with him: “TERRORISTS”
Left-wing Service Employees International boss Andy Stern was identified earlier this year as the most frequent visitor (22 visits!) to the White House since Barack Hussein Obama’s election. He is also strongly connected to ACORN, the extreme left-wing Obama-supporting “community organizing” group currently under a massive criminal fraud investigation in many states. They even share an office address.
“There are a lot of terrorists in the Senate who think we are supposed to negotiate with them when they have their particular needs that they want met,” the Obama confidant and union boss Andy Stern said in a Business Week magazine interview yesterday.
The SEIU is also the group whom Barack Obama told, during the campaign and since being elected, that he wouldn’t do anything without consulting them first.
Andy Stern sounds very much like a communist to me. Here’s some key points in Wikipedia, which even Wikipedia didn’t alter.
• Stern is intent upon influencing federal legislation that helps revitalize the labor movement through universal health care, expanding union ranks via the Employee Free Choice Act (commonly known as “card check”) [6], stronger regulations on business, profit sharing for employees, and higher taxes, efforts consistent with a new global economic model that moves American businesses away from traditional, free-market capitalism [7].
• Stern has been a contributing blogger at The Huffington Post[18] and actively uses Twitter.[19]
• Stern has been a key figure in financing the online grassroots community Netroots, along with Dean, George Soros, Simon Rosenberg, and Andrew S. Rappaport, to funnel a progressive agenda to liberal bloggers[20].
• Through Stern’s leadership, the SEIU has funneled vast amounts of financing to the Democratic Party and its candidates,
• SEIU contributed $65 million to the 2004 campaign[26] by Sen. John Kerry to oust former President George W. Bush[27]. The union spent another $85 million on Democratic candidates in 2008, at least $60 million going toward the election of President Barack Obama[28].
• Stern was an ardent supporter of the $787 billion stimulus bill, known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009[29], and the majority ownership of Chyrsler and General Motors by the United States Treasury[30].
• Stern has been a frequent visitor to the White House since Obama’s election[31] . Between Inaguration Day and July 31, 2009, Stern visited the White House 22 times, meeting with the president seven times[32].
• Under Stern, the SEIU has poured millions into a group called Health Care for America NOW!, which set up pavillions at nearly every major health care protest in 2009, and has given the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) nearly $6 million since 2006 – including $250,000 in 2009 – according to U.S. Department of Labor disclosure and the union’s own statements[33].
• The SEIU and ACORN have had joint bank acounts with Wells Fargo bank. Copies of their bank statements were retrieved in documents thought to be lost in Hurricane Katrina.
• After graduation, he spent time traveling in Europe and trained in the tactics of radical activism at the Midwest Academy[14], an educational institute formed by former Students for a Democratic Society member Paul and Heather Booth to teach leftist community organizers how to promote social change and infiltrate the labor movement[15].
On another video:
OBAMA: “Before debating health care, I talked to Andy Stern and SEIU members.”
OBAMA: “I’ve spent my entire adult life working with SEIU. I’m not a newcomer to this.”
From the L.A. Times, June 2009:
The SEIU spent $60 million to help elect Obama, according to the union. Stern said the group deployed 100,000 volunteers during the campaign, including 3,000 who worked on the election full time.
Now in the White House, Obama has continued to derive political benefits from the union. It was the SEIU’s health chief, Dennis Rivera, who helped bring industry to the table to start talks on a healthcare overhaul.
With nearly 2 million members, the SEIU says it has people in 13 states whose senators are considered important targets in the lobbying effort behind the emerging Democratic healthcare bill. The union wants to coax those senators into voting for the bill.
Stern can boast that union officials are scattered throughout the Obama administration. White House political director Patrick Gaspard is a former executive at an SEIU local based in New York. No other union has placed anyone at such a high level in the White House.
Anna Burger, SEIU secretary-treasurer, was appointed to Obama’s economic recovery board. And union associate counsel John Sullivan was named to the six-member Federal Election Commission. ...

State of the Crocus Address
Since nobody seems to want these crocus updates, I’ll assume it’s because I haven’t explained it well enough, like Pres. Obama told Diane Sawyer over the weekend vis-a-vis his Obamacare that nobody wants because he hasn’t explained it enough times yet (or you’re just too dumb to get it!). So here’s another address about it (or you’re just too dumb to get it!). The State of the Crocus. All rise.
Also see: “Crocus update: blooming is currently prorogued” (Jan 25);
and “Crocus ready to bloom” (Jan 22)
Be seated.
Like Obama’s unemployment prognostications (it’ll be 8% I swear! OK it’s 11, so who’s counting?), the crocus has still failed to bloom. Except here’s the thing. It seems to have tried to bloom, but a slug or multiple slugs working in cahoots like in a vast no-wing conspiracy of some sort, have actually eaten the flower itself as you can see below. (Also see this blog entry re slugs for a sluggy coikidink!)
If I had applied some of those wonderful pesticides (now banned in most liberal “progressive” territories which we once thought were our own private property —suckers!), I could have — or allowed to have — fulfilled the natural crocus bloomage.
So in effect, I could say that I could have “created or saved” the blooming crocus. Yup. Created or saved.
As it is, it looks near dead.
But unaided by any stimulus at all, these two other ones have popped-up. They’re very enterprising! Private enterprising! Do note the smarmy li’l snail sittin’ right there waiting to pounce though! I’ll zap it with some yummy illegal pesticides (or possibly send the young puppy Sammy out there to eat it) right quick.
And speaking of Sammy, for all those who ask about Sammy and whether her raging communist or jihadist reign of terror is over, well yes it mostly is, at six months and four days of age. Here she is, post escargot lunch.

Eliminating the Canadian deficit in three or four years? POSSIBLE, says Canadian Taxpayers Fed
The good Canadian Taxpayer Federation once again scores with an easy-to-read, common sense-filled and well-thought-out submission that even MPs can find time to read, when they’re not busy protesting prorogation by holding news conferences with the state-owned and taxpayer-funded CBC about saving the endangered knobby rams-horn slug from evil human activity (stop all building… except for “national” housing for the poor!). It’s called Zero in Three, and it’s an action plan designed to offer real, sensible alternatives prior to the next budget.
You’ll also see a few simple charts and graphs showing how the deficit and debt has ballooned over the years and decades, and under whose political watch. Get ready to eat crow, all you Conservative Party voters who refuse to open your eyes to what is actually still the progressive Conservative Party, chock-a-block full of progressives with their big nanny-state, government-growing agendas to increase reliance on government, and control over our lives, and increase taxation and the regulatory morass of our businesses. No, we still don’t have a conservative party in power, as the CTF demonstrates with their stats and charts and graphs showing massive spending and debt increases under their watch, just as under the Liberals’ (even if in nearly every other way, we’re far better off now —but that’s not necessarily the CTF’s bailiwick).
If there’s one idea missing from it (which on the other hand Maclean’s writer Andrew Coyne did pick up on in his own ideas this week), it’s the fact that the state-owned, taxpayer funded CBC should of course be separated from the giant national silicone and hope-filled teat. At over a BILLION taxpayer dollars per year, and a federal deficit and debt standing where they now are, and considering how that behemoth of socialism-reliant leftist culture competes against private enterprise, and considering the many other negatives that it represents, that’s a gimme, it seems to me.
But it’s a really good read. It’s mandatory reading for all thinking Canadians who care about this country’s future and are OK with some useless and even damaging slugs — including those ugly ones found outside in nature — going extinct.

Canada finds worse, face-saving health care alternative to relying on better American medical system
Forget the taxi! Faced with overcrowding and other problems inherent in Canada’s government-run North Korean-style “health care” system, many pregnant women in British Columbia, Canada, have been shipped to better-equipped, more capable American hospitals in Washington state or Oregon, in recent years.
The government does this using specially-designed government-owned aircraft, which of course often fly right over state hospitals below, with their cargo. You’d think that would leave a mark on the minds of the pilots, and certainly the patients. In 2007-2008 alone, nearly 100 women from BC alone were shipped south to America for natal/post-natal care not available in British Columbia. This is because under the government-run system, hospitals in BC have been overcrowded, sometimes lacking what Americans think of as basic technology, staff, or the medical expertise to handle the job.
The “progressive” Liberal Party government in BC says that the problem has all been solved, as a result of better communications now apparently suddenly available in 2010, such as phones and email, perhaps. This will work much better than the smoke signals which were the only thing available until this year, and which held us back as compared to the more advanced Americans.
The health care issue hasn’t been solved mind you — only their political embarrassment. They can’t openly admit the socialist system they are glued to has failed them badly, because all liberals have their entire political capital tied up in making this stupid thing work, no matter how much it costs taxpayers (which is currently around half of BC’s provincial budget).
In order to do nothing more than save from the embarrassment of the socialized system not being able to provide adequate health care available close to home inside of our own country, and the embarrassment of shipping patients south to the obviously better American system (which has the added downside of blatantly proving that our system is failed and the American system works), the liberal government in Canada’s western province now ships patients to any old place they can find a bed within BC, instead, owing to “better communications”. I think in government speak, “better communications” is sort of like “revenue neutral”. Or “public option”.
Which is great, except that BC is about the size of France, Germany and the Netherlands combined. It is larger than the total area of Washington, Oregon and California, combined. That’s some neighborhood. That’s what passes for health care close to home, in Canada.
So now, patients and their unborn babies in crisis will be shipped to another hospital in BC which can handle them instead — possibly up north, one thousand miles away instead of in, say, Seattle. To save cash. Yay.
Canada’s North Korean-style “health care” (wink!) system, which used to rely even more on America’s health care, finds a way out of looking quite so bad, for a while. Fabulous.
Vote liberal. Get more of this. (It’s “progressive”!)
Airlifts of pregnant women curtailed
Conference calls help B.C. save millions
By Pamela Fayerman, Vancouver Sun
January 27, 2010Measures to reduce the number of pregnant B.C. women airlifted to American hospitals for high-risk deliveries and neonatal intensive care have been so successful the practice has nearly been eliminated in the last two years.
The key to the solution was better communication: a daily conference call linking 13 hospitals, representatives of the B.C. Ambulance Service, the ministry of health and frontline neonatology staff so they can figure out where beds are available in B.C. instead of simply transferring high-risk pregnant women to hospitals in Washington state and Oregon.
... In the current fiscal year, (ending March 31), the provincial government has spent $1.8 million to send four women out of the country ...

The provincial government has spent about $100 million a year in recent years on thousands of B.C. patients who received cross-border medical care not available here or because they fell ill while travelling.
While expectant moms have garnered the most attention, B.C. patients are also going to places like Ontario and Alberta for health-system-paid organ transplants and heart surgery. Some are getting care in the U.S. for problems that can’t be treated quickly enough here, such as gastric bypass surgery for morbidly obese patients who may die sooner without it. ...
Do note the quotes I placed around health care, above, because just as in the case of the liberal-left’s push for a government-run health care system in the U.S., our system has far less to do with “health care” than the push for “progressive” political ideology and agenda.
