Canadian Thanksgiving ‘07: “Thank God Almighty!” And that’s official state policy, liberals.
As I do every year in this space, I like to remind Canadians (and our friends the Americans too) that in Canada, Thanksgiving is actually a Godly, Christian celebration for the express purpose of thanking God. (“God almighty”, specifically, is the exact wording of the Thanksgiving Proclamation). As we know, liberals are against that.
Yes that’s right, Thanksgiving is a national, Godly holiday in Canada by official parliamentary proclamation back in the 1950’s and earlier, actually.
Church and state. In Canada. Oh my God my heavens my word. The end is nigh. Wake the kids and call the dog. Head for the hills. Soon we’ll be a theocracy just like Iran. Oh the humanity… and the “secular humanist” religion. Someone get Layton on the horn! This ain’t “modern”! Or “progressive”.
The factual background on Canada’s Thanksgiving as it pertains to its official designation in Canada is this: in Canada, officially speaking, and by official proclamation in Canada’s Parliament (that’s the state!) is:
“A day of general Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the
bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed.”
Yes that’s right. On January 31, 1957, Parliament (that’s the state!) issued a proclamation with that wording to permanently fix the second Monday in October as Thanksgiving… in order for the nation to thank God Almighty.
I love this great Canadian, Christian tradition, as I love my country the way it was established based on its sound Judeo-Christian values and a strong, brave, pioneering, entrepreneurial, freedom and democracy-loving foundation. I wish people didn’t seek to change that.
Not to pile onto the poor liberals who constantly lament days like Thanksgiving and Christmas with their dire post-modern “Church and state! Church and state!” warnings as their official “proclamation”, but they seem to make an effort to “correct” the actual history of Canada and even its poorly drafted (by liberals, ironically) Charter. I imagine them trying to find a way of “reading into” the wording of the Charter, so as to abolish this ever-so egregious act of “church and state”, and foil this great Canadian Christian tradition. Although it would be a little silly, perhaps they could add their Godless liberal verbiage right under the part at the very beginning of the Charter where it says:
“Whereas Canada is founded upon the principles that recognize the supremacy of God and the rule of law…”
But as I said, that might be a little silly.
Politics aside, happy Thanksgiving, Canada.
