At least two MORE Order of Canada medals being returned

Written by Joel Johannesen on Monday July 07 2008 at 02:24 PM

One written about in a letter to the editor:

Why I’m returning my uncle’s Order of Canada

It is with the greatest difficulty and regret that I am returning to the government of Canada a gift that I received from my uncle, E.M. Culliton. A former chief justice of the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal, he was a recipient of the Companion of the Order of Canada for work that he devoted his life to with honour and dignity. Shortly before his death he gave me his box of medals. Pointing to the white enameled gold snowflake, he said: “I am giving this to you because I know that you will know what to do with it.”

Uncle Ted understood the potential of every human being. He would never accept that one person was of less value than another and his ability to relate to children was what really made him a great man. I am returning his hard-earned medal to the government of Canada as it would no longer have meaning to his sense of morality and values.

This award has turned to dust and ashes, meaningless and empty. More important is the reward that comes from embracing all human life from conception to natural death with its joys, sorrows, misfortunes and triumphs.

—John Culliton Poston, Mission, B. C.

Order of Canada to be Returned Publicly - Madonna House Returns Founder’s Award
“Catherine Doherty was honoured to receive this award in 1976”

OTTAWA, July 7, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Representatives from Madonna House, a Catholic community based in Combermere, Ontario, will make the journey to Ottawa Tuesday morning to return the Order of Canada medal awarded to its founder, Catherine Doherty.

The move is in response to the awarding of one of Canada’s highest honours to Dr. Henry Morgentaler, as announced by the Governor General’s Office on July 1, 2008.

Catherine Doherty (August 15, 1896 - December 14, 1985) was a pioneer of social justice and an internationally acclaimed speaker. In addition to founding the community of Madonna House, she was a prolific writer and best-selling author of dozens of books. She was awarded the Order of Canada in 1976 in recognition of “a lifetime of devoted services to the underprivileged of many nationalities, both in Canada and abroad.” Her cause for canonization as a saint was opened by Bishop Brendan O’Brien, then bishop of the diocese of Pembroke, Ontario, in 2000.

Hat tip to Paul Westhaver and LifeSite for the noticing the second one, which for some mysterious reason the mainstream media didn’t catch.

Keep ‘em coming.

• If you think this site is of no value, then don't pay anything for it, and it will fade into the sunset. That's capitalism at work.
