News release from the Prime Minister’s Office:

Statement by the Prime Minister on Cyprus airlift

July 19, 2006
Paris, France

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement on evacuating Canadian citizens from Lebanon:

“As you all know, an evacuation of thousands of citizens from a distant land is a challenging undertaking. A challenge being faced many nations at the same time.

“Canadian officials – in the region and back home in Ottawa – are working around the clock with our allies to secure the safe passage of all Canadians who wish to leave Lebanon.

“I am pleased to report that an evacuation ship chartered by Canada arrived in Beirut earlier today and is taking on passengers at this moment. That ship is expected to make its way to Cyprus tonight.

“More ships will be on their way in the coming hours, and we are going to keep sending ships to help those Canadians who wish to leave Lebanon. Getting people out of Lebanon is only the first step in the evacuation plan.

“Once in a safe haven, citizens who wish to return home must secure air travel back to Canada.

“As you know, I was originally scheduled to return to Ottawa from Paris tonight.

“Because of the seriousness of the situation – and our relative proximity to Cyprus – I have decided to take the Canadian forces aircraft we have been traveling on to help airlift evacuees back home.

“The aircraft will be stripped down to only a skeleton staff, including Laureen and myself, to free up the maximum number of seats for evacuees.

“This action – in and of itself – will not resolve the many challenges faced by the tens of thousands of Canadians who may want to leave Lebanon; but it allows us to do what we can, with what we have to ensure the safe and secure return of Canadians.”

Meanwhile, Canada’s state-run news media war against Canada continues apace this morning.

State-employed reporter Nahlah Ayed reports amidst the waiting crowds of Canadians in Lebanon (the largest group of foreign nations in Lebanon in all the world, any questions?) that a ship is now arriving in the Port of Beirut to evacuate Canadians “13 hours after they arrived”.

She neglects to mention that most of the Canadians there weren’t told to show up “13 hours” ago, but were told to show up at various times today—like 11:00 AM this morning.

One citizen there reported that folks who were supposed to show up at 11:00 AM actually showed up at 6:00 AM and so on, and he somehow concluded that that was proof it was “disorganized”.  The CBC reporter, producers, and editors apparently thought it would be best to just let that bon mot sit there for you, the viewer of state-run news in Canada.

CBC Newsworld continues to spend their day actively seeking Canadians in Lebanon who are prepared to criticize Canada for its terrible treatment of its citizens trying to evacuate.

They found a pregnant lady!  Eureka!  She went on and on (over the phone) for about ten minutes about how badly organized it was. No word on why she’d chosen to travel to one of the most terrorist-ridden places on earth while pregnant.

They even found someone who managed to find their way to the Edmonton Airport this morning from their trip to Lebanon.  But you see they did it all on their own.  They were forced to.  When they phoned the Canadian Embassy in Beirut, there was no answer.  So they left. And they’re home… but there was no answer on the phone in Beirut.  Safe, with family back home, but the point is there was no answer….. ad infinitum

Maybe the Liberal government politicians like Paul (“we lead the world”) Martin and former Foreign Affairs Minister and current Liberal Party leader Bill (“Canada should side with the terrorists too!”) Graham —who were the people who hired and trained all those Canadian embassy people who organized all this —should be called on the phone.  And maybe someone there could patch the reporter through to the Liberal government’s former Defence Minister (also Graham) and ask what happened to our Navy.  And to the former Immigration and Refugee Minister who should be asked why it is that Canada has the largest contingent of foreign nationals in all the world —in Lebanon.

In fairness (and in lieu of the CBC’s abysmal reporting) I think the Canadian embassy staff in Lebanon are good people who are doing the best they can in a situation that is not of their own doing.  It’s really the doings of Islamofascist terrorists, and Liberals, in actual fact.  But the CBC apparently doesn’t want you to know that.  They just want you to feel bad about your country—in spite of facts.
