In France, the legal retirement age is 60. President Sarkozy, who like every other European leader is desperate to balance the books, proposes to raise this to 62. Hence the scene, as strikers work at bringing the country to a halt, and fill the streets in the time-honoured, Parisian fashion.

Over the Channel, the flashpoint was an attempt by management to lay off 800 employees of the London Underground. Sympathetic unions began an industrial action designed to cripple the city in Monday’s rush hour.

There’s nothing more annoying than getting a complaint about my gun collection from a feminist with a tattoo on her lower back. I don’t let anyone irresponsible get near my guns so that no one gets killed. When the feminist lets irresponsible men near her tattoos there’s a better chance that someone’s getting aborted.

Labour Day is rolling around again—our nice, Protestant, North American Labour Day, that is months away from “May Day,” and has nothing to do with it—and we must all switch from heat-stroke mode, back to moral exhaustion.

I used to quote with glee a Scotchman I knew (i.e. a Scots Canadian), to the effect that, “Labour Day is the day on which we must work especially hard, to show how much we have gained in efficiency over the past year.”

In an article posted today at TIME.com gloriously espousing all the wonder of President Obama’s “stimulus” plan to date, a caption under a photo of Obama touring a solar array reads,

“New juice Obama, right, tours a huge solar array in Nevada. Catching rays is easy; storing and shipping solar energy is harder.”

Senator Mike Duffy, who is working hard for the Conservative Party to raise funds for the party, sends me personalized videos, calling me “Joel”.  Except…

The arrests last week in Ottawa and London, Ont., of four of eight suspects allegedly linked with the global Islamist movement reveal again how vulnerable Canada and other democracies are to Islamist “homegrown” terrorism.

The arrested suspects — Canadian Muslims with college degrees, of Pakistani and Middle Eastern origin, in their 20s and two of them trained as medical professionals (Dr. Khurram Sher, 28, and X-ray technician Misbahuddin Ahmed, 26) — fit the profile of a segment of young Muslim males in the West embracing the terror-filled “jihadi” ideology of Islamism, and allegedly prepared to kill and maim their fellow-citizens.
