Conservative Republican-led USA helps broker cease-fire in Middle East

Conservative Republican President George W. Bush’s new Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, who is very conservative, appears to have been instrumental in what could be a cease-fire deal between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

Liberals were quick to denounce the deal, citing lack of official French and U.N. approval, and of course lack of any liberals.

Pettigrew's hairCanada’s Liberal Minister of Foreign Affairs, Pierre Pettigrew, who is also there leading the world on behalf of Liberal Prime Minister Paul (“we lead the world”) Martin, was unavailable for comment, possibly busy grooming his hair in the bathroom.  Pettigrew might do well to take hair-do tips from Conservative Republican Rice if he want to be at peace with his hair, or be a world leader in spreading peace throughout the world.

JERUSALEM (CNN)—Israeli and Palestinian leaders will announce a cease-fire at Tuesday’s summit in Sharm el-Sheik, Egypt, Palestinian Cabinet member Saeb Erakat said Monday.

Under the agreement, Israeli troops will halt incursions into Palestinian territories and Palestinian officials will urge all Palestinian factions to halt their attacks on Israel, Palestinian officials said.

Erakat’s statement came hours after leaders of Israel and the Palestinian Authority agreed to travel to Washington for separate meetings with President Bush.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice—after talks with leaders from both sides—said this is the most promising time for Mideast peace in years.

In the weeks since Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas was elected to replace the late Yasser Arafat, Israel and the Palestinian Authority have taken confidence-building steps regarding security, Palestinian prisoners and a proposed Israeli withdrawal from the West Bank.

Rice, who is on a diplomatic tour of the Middle East and Europe, met with Abbas on Monday and with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon the day before.

“This is the most promising moment for progress between Palestinians and Israelis in recent years,” Rice said. “I depart the region confident of the success of the meeting tomorrow between President Abbas and Prime Minster Sharon.”
