“CTV Newsnet” application before the CRTC: pro or con?

I just wrote an email regarding a queery from our friends at CBCWatch about the CTV Newsnet application currently before the CRTC.  Here’s what i wrote:

…I’m just not sure where I come down on this CTV Newsnet thing.

While I’d do just about anything to obliterate the CBC and its Newsworld, I’m not convinced that CTV isn’t really just working in collusion with the rest of Canada’s uber-pro-liberal-left media.  I’m sure you’ve seen that missive sent out by CTV to Fox News Channel CRTC letter-writers—they don’t once mention competing against CBC (or for that matter CNN or CNBC/MSNBC etc), they only mention their need to—and the fairness of being able to—compete against that “American news service” Fox News Channel.

They say they never opposed the Fox News Channel application, but the Canadian Association of Broadcasters certainly did oppose it, and CTV is a prominent member—without whose membership the Association would be a shadow of itself.  To say that CTV holds a position of considerable sway within that organization is to put it mildly, I would think.

I’m not sure of the viewer-numbers of CBC Newsworld (low!), but assuming CTV wins their bid, would this not just be making it even harder to finally be able to inject a little latent conservativism into Canada through Fox News Channel, after all these years of “all-liberal-left, all the time” TV in Canada?

While the broadcasters of Canada lament the so-called inundation of American news services in Canada (which are mostly unrestricted the way CTV is—true enough), I think they’re really just using that as a ruse to detract from the real imbalance, which is a lack of conservative point of view in this country.  There isn’t one.  CTV promises no relief from their history of subtle liberal-left propagandizing.  No Canadian citizen appears ready or able to step up to that extremely important plate.  When they do, I’ll be all over it.

On a slightly different tangent, could you explain to me why Global can’t apply for a news channel license?  Not that they’d fill the ‘conservative’ gap—I’m just curious and haven’t been able to find a quick and easy answer.

Thanks John,
Joel

In any case here’s the link to a post there about it.
