Did the Prime Minister’s Office discuss police-work with the RCMP?

I find this odd.

In a CTV story about the fact that the Liberals claim the Grewal tapes have been “doctored”, this bit was added to the bottom of the article:

[…] On Wednesday, there was confusion over the exact nature of the RCMP probe.

“We are looking into the allegations of what happened and what everyone is talking about if, in fact, a criminal act happened,” RCMP Cpl. Nathalie Deschenes told CTV News.

Later, the Prime Minister’s Office asked CTV to call RCMP Chief Superintendent Bernie Corrigan, who contradicted Cpl. Deschenes’ statement. He said there was no criminal investigation at this point, but the Mounties are considering a formal request from the Bloc Quebecois for an inquiry.

“How did they know in the PMO, and can the prime minister tell us when his communications department became the official spokesperson for the RCMP?” MacKay asked on Thursday.

“Let me make it absolutely clear: No one from the Prime Minister’s Office contacted anyone from the RCMP,” McLellan responded.

The Conservatives are saying that “it left the impression that the Prime Minister’s Office might have been meddling in this,” CTV’s Rosemary Thompson reported from Ottawa.

“Now, speaking to the official at the PMO, they are very adamant, saying they never spoke to the RCMP. This of course would be very serious for the Prime Minister’s Office to be engaging in any kind of influence of a police investigation, adamantly they are saying over and over again they never spoke to the RCMP.”

They’re “very adamant”, are they?  Well let’s call it a day then!

Or, they could ask the tough questions.

The Bloc and the NDP were the ones who had asked the RCMP to investigate.  Conservatives handed over the tapes.  The RCMP are said to be looking the issue over.  How did the Liberals—the Prime Minister’s Office at that—know that RCMP Chief Superintendent Bernie Corrigan would be able to contradict Cpl. Nathalie Deschenes, if they “never spoke to anyone from the RCMP”?

image And why doesn’t the media ask these questions? The initial question is:  How did the PMO know this if they never spoke to anybody at the RCMP?

And why did the PMO contact CTV News and tell them that?

It would take another news agency to ask CTV why they were contacted by the PMO.  Perhaps the state-run CBC could question the CTV!  Or the Toronto Star!  Then it’s off to the bar for some laughs over the day’s events!

UPDATE:  I see where CTV Newsnet is covering this in their news loop but apparently they’re content with the “they’re adament, so they’re OK” stance.  I think it’s worth being just a little more persistent than that on matters like this.  Call me crazy.
