Government ill-advised to direct offensive speech towards citizens

In another excellent column, Mike S. Adams writes about the subtle shift in “rights” and the perception of what is and is not acceptable on college campuses—and in fact the example could be extended to society as a whole.

See if you can’t find examples of what Mike Adams talks about in his column, Georgia On My Mind.  In Canada, think not just of college and university campuses nearly all of which are state-funded, but think also of the state-run media (the CBC) and the state-run media regulator.  Think of the individual elitist liberal government members speaking down to lowly citizens in insulting tones.

Citizens of this country have every right to say that [Biblical characters] David, Jonathan, and Daniel were gay or that Ruth was a lesbian. I strongly support the rights of leftists to damage their credibility by saying stupid things in public.

But the constitution is supposed to protect offensive speech that is directed by individuals towards governments.  It is not the role of the government to direct offensive speech towards its citizens, using public funds and dismissing public outcry under the guise of academic freedom.

The time has come for our public universities to assume the role of viewpoint neutral facilitators of political activism, not as political activists stifling the views of those with whom they disagree.
