It’s not up to us, mere elected representantives of our country
Democracy has nothing to do with it (Canada). It’s up to the liberal-leftist political elites who think right, er, left, designated and appointed to the politburo by Liberals. They make the decisions. Our hands are tied. Sorry. Better luck in some other country.
Dear Mr. Johannesen:
On behalf of the Prime Minister, I would like to acknowledge receipt of your recent correspondence regarding the Order of Canada. We have noted your concern and are pleased to have this opportunity to respond.
The Government is not involved in either the deliberations or decisions with respect to which individuals are appointed to the Order of Canada. It is Rideau Hall that approves the final appointments based on the recommendations of the Advisory Council of the Order of Canada, which is chaired by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada.
With respect to specific appointments to the Order, the Prime Minister’s preference is for the Order of Canada to be an honour that unifies and brings Canadians together. Clearly, this appointment did not do that.
To further express your concerns, we would recommend that you contact the Governor General’s office directly at:

The Right Honourable Stephen Harper, P.C., M.P.
Prime Minister of Canada
Mr. Prime Minister:
I understand there is the possibility of the abortionist Henry Morgentaler surreptitiously getting awarded the honor of the Order of Canada on July 1. (http://www.proudtobecanadian.ca/index/weblog/8932/)
I believe this would be among the most egregious mistakes and most dishonorable milestones this country has ever known. I strongly urge you to use whatever means are at your disposal to prevent this atrocious act from taking place.
Yours truly,
Joel Johannesen

NOTE: I did write the Governor-General. No response. Of course, she was promoted to G-G from her job at the CBC, and they don’t like me much…
Campaign Life Coalition commissioned possibly the largest poll ever undertaken in Canada on the matter of abortion. ”... [O]ne the largest, if not the largest ever, Canadian polls on an abortion related issue. It paid a professional polling company to contact over 150,000 Canadian households and ask their view on the Order of Canada award to Canada’s number one abortionist. It wanted absolute certainty about where Canadians stood on the issue. ...” The plain and simple question they asked is typed below.
Massive New Poll: 56% of Canadians Oppose Morgentaler Order of Canada
Poll called 157,115 Canadian households, yielding over 13,000 respondents - Results weighted in regional proportions
July 22, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A random telephone poll of Canadian households with 13,324 respondents conducted between July 17-21, 2008 has revealed that 55.8% of Canadians oppose the awarding of the Order of Canada to abortionist Henry Morgentaler.
The national poll commissioned by Campaign Life Coalition (CLC) and just completed, by KLRVU polling has a 95% confidence level and a margin of error of 1.5%. The data is accurate 19 times out of 20. A breakdown of votes by province is provided.

Large small town Fryer talks “buffoon”. And “European”.
Luckily I’m multilingual and I can speak socialist and buffoon.
A citizen from the far-left coast, John Fryer, listing his apparently “dual” citizenship on his web page as “Citizenship: Canadian and European”, has taken exception to remarks made by a Conservative MP, Nanaimo-Alberni MP James Lunney.
Speaking for himself and many of his constituents, no doubt, because that’s his job, the MP Lunney said that he hopes Morgentaler lives long enough to see his Order of Canada award revoked. So do I. So do millions of sensible people like me who care about life. It’s why we’re called “pro-life”. We love life and think everybody has a right to it. Including Morgentaler and all the pre-born babies he operated on for “health” reasons.
Fryer, the self-appointed town crier and know-it-all arbiter of what’s right and wrong, thought Lunney’s remark was, and I quote, “vicious”.
Yes. It’s “vicious” in much the same way as, say, allowing the life of a human baby to proceed as normal in the womb without it being interrupted by getting its head crushed and then being sucked out of the womb in an abortion mill, and then being thrown into the garbage. So it is established that Fryer is a buffoon.
Fryer apparently called up his ever so un-vicious and moderate allies at the local liberal-left-luvin’ newspaper, the famous Parksville Qualicum Beach News, and voiced his grave concerns about all the “vicious”. Coinkydink alert: Fryer is running against Lunney in the next election for the hideous Green Party.
Dutifully, the paper ran with the big story, declaring—in no uncertain terms—in their headline: “ MP’s comments ‘vicious’ ”. Ah. The science is settled.
...The bottom line, Fryer said, is government should stay out of the process and leave it up to the committee, which includes the chief justice of the supreme court and several heads of Canadian universities, among others.
“A large majority of the independent selection committee felt he deserved the honour,” Fryer said. “The government should stay out of it. It’s none of their business and it’s none of Mr. Lunney’s business.”
Well that’s odd, Mr. Fryer. Maybe that’s how they do it in your other country of citizenship, “Europe”, but not here.
Those dutifully reported words are from the man who made his mark in life by the dogged promotion of the power—in strength and number—of militant public sector labor unions in Canada. This is the brain trust that believes the government should get in ALL our business. And our families. And our personal lives. And our culture. And our education. And our health care. And our town festivals and events. And our television watching. And radio listening. And train-taking. And movies. And documentaries. And car insurance. And car building. And liquor store running. And wheat selling. And trans-fats-eating. And cheese-making. And mail delivery. And smoking. And thinking. And child care (and “early learning” —wink!) institution-building, and everything else they can dream up…
Mr. Fryer, an MP wannabe, thinks he should get into “their business”, but citizen representative Lunney, MP, the people’s representative in government, shouldn’t. People must not be allowed a voice in government, and that voice must not interfere in, um, government. Being liberal is hard.
OK scratch that bit about Fryer being a buffoon. He’s a crazy socialist dictator in the making.
Memo to the town Fryer: MPs represent the people. Literally, the common folks. That’s their whole job. That’s it. They are our voice in government. It’s why they call it the House of Commons, you rotund socialist.
Fryer and his “trust us, we’re from the government” tribe apparently think we in Canada (the archaic monarchy bit aside) are a people of the government; rather than the government being a government of the people, by the people, and for the people (hat tip to America).
Socialists are like that. It’s why they try to create a “Canadian Culture” for us. And why they do things like proclaim what “Canadian Values” are (on their state-owned CBC), and so on, often using their now blatantly obviously political devices (of their own government creation) like the Order Of Canada division, and its liberal-left government-appointed award selection committee, who make liberal-leftist agenda-driving proclamations like the Morgentaler “Abortion is a Canadian Value which we WILL celebrate!” award on none other than our very own Canada Day.
Naturally, Fryer apparently thinks all the big decisions should be made by the elites who have been appointed to their positions… by government. Mostly by liberals and leftists. Exactly like himself. Thus we have liberals and leftists on the committee —a list which includes the head liberal agenda-driver at the Order of Canada committee, the Chief Justice of the liberals’ Supreme Court division (who may hear a case some day about abortion), who was appointed to the Supreme Court itself by government; heads of state-owned, state-funded universities; perpetually state-funded and state-funding-reliant “artists” and ballet dancers; and of course the award decisions then go through the government-appointed Governor-General of Canada herself, the former state-owned, state-run CBC reporter and Liberal government Paul Martin-appointed Michaëlle Jean.
We the people are too stupid to make decisions, and certainly shouldn’t question the government decisions. No, not when his government politburo and their ever so remarkably like-minded appointees on their beloved planning committees can make them for us.
But don’t take my word for it, Mr. Fryer. Listen to the words of the most powerful person you will ever meet in your entire life: she’s the Canadian citizen who read the above-noted article and emailed me from Parksville: Jean, who said:
...I suppose it’s none of my business either. Why don’t the little people just shut up and leave these things to the elites who know what is best.
... Funny how killing so many babies is ok, but a comment by James Lunney is “vicious”.
What’s vicious is the possibility of still more elitist undemocratic socialists like Fryer getting into office.

Joel’s thought for the day: on liberal-left, abortions, and sanity
It’s amazing to me how pro-life people are marginalized and castigated and berated, pigeon-holed and shouted-down by pro-abortion liberals as: “extremists”.
And how things have “progressed”; how the weak-minded have been led by liberals and their media and the clergy in their academia division (the teachers) to subscribe to that spurious bit of social engineering.
To liberals and the left generally, abortion is not “extreme” —it’s a “moderate” and “middle of the road” and “mainstream” activity to them; the blood, the human death, the absolutely horrendous surgical tools —vacuums and skull crushers and forceps and chemicals —and the gruesome medical procedures, and naturally the incalculable mental anguish and pain and foreboding of the would-be mother and father that often results, all notwithstanding.
That’s how liberals and leftists think. And this, they call “progressive”.
I’m not entirely sure that’s sane.

EIGHTH Order of Canada award ditched by recipient… and counting
More Canadians have returned Order of Abortion Appreciation (the award formerly known as Order of Canada) award.
See below for information on how to return yours.
8th Canadian to Return Order of Canada Because of Morgentaler Award
By Tim Waggoner
WINDSOR, ON, July 11, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Retired Police Detective Frank Chauvin has announced his intention to return his Order of Canada decoration.
Chauvin revealed his decision to the Windsor Star on Thursday morning:
“Yes, it’s definitely going. I don’t want to be painted with the same brush as Morgentaler. It’s definitely going back.”
Chauvin is a retired police detective, renown for his dedication to serving the poor in international communities, such as when he founded an orphanage for abandoned girls in Port-au-Prince.
“It’s a bittersweet decision,” said Chauvin. “It was a wonderful thing to have obtained . . . But it’s gotta go.”
Chauvin believes the Order of Canada has been tainted by Morgentaler’s induction into it, and is disheartened that “this is what Canada stands for these days.”

Chauvin’s name has been added to a growing list of Canadians who have returned Canada’s highest civilian honour because of the award to Henry Morgentaler:
Former Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick Gilbert Finn
Monsignor A.J. Goski
Madonna House foundress Catherine Doherty
Father Lucien Larre

Meanwhile, over 10,500 people have now signed the petition to rescind the award to Morgentaler.
The left keeps “mum”
And 33 MPs, nearly all of them Conservative Party MPs, have voiced their concern or outrage at the Morgentaler award. No NDP or Bloc socialists have voiced even the slightest concern, and most Liberals, whose party should be considered the party of abortion, keep “mum”, as it were. All parties are officially in favor of limitless taxpayer abortion for any reason or no reason whatsoever at any time in any pregnancy, including the Conservative Party.

IMPORTANT READ: Henry Aubin’s column at PTBC - references Margaret Somerville
An excellent column by Montreal Gazette columnist and author Henry Aubin caught my eye this week. It’s excellent because it helps expose the perfidy involved in the cabal of liberals who secretly arranged a national award for the liberal-left’s abortion hero, Henry Morgentaler, in order to advance their personal, political/social cause.
I asked for and got his OK to post it here at PTBC. It’s an excellent read at two minutes.
In it, he explains that the brilliant Canadian ethicist Margaret Somerville was passed over by what we now know is the politically tainted Order of Canada committee, ostensibly because Miss Somerville was “too controversial”. Miss Somerville has, you see, argued in favor of traditional marriage and against radical atheism, and so on.
Last year, as a matter of fact, I posted a column by Margaret Somerville here at PTBC (after personally asking her first, as I always do with all our columns and columnists). But she was particularly concerned about this web site, which, based on her answer, she’d obviously visited before, and knew it for what it was: a conservative advocacy site. She told me that she would prefer not to be referred to as a “guest
columnist” (as of course I normally call the non-regular special guest columnists). This website, she told me, is more political than she was comfortable with in her professional life. She explained that she has always avoided speaking other than as an independent individual and has never joined any advocacy or political organization or ever signed a petition or group letter. This, she said, let her believe that it gives what she has to say more neutrality than it would otherwise be perceived as having, which is important for the credibility of her opinions.
So I made a special new category of columns with a special “avatar” icon (that category has now been used a few times), and in her case, made a special preamble to the column advising readers that she is not associated with this web site as a regular columnist but rather she simply allowed her column to be posted here for interest and discussion purposes.
I tell you all this because it obviously was and continues to be extremely important to Miss Somerville that she remain absolutely as neutral as possible in her professional life. To not be a “militant”. To not be too “controversial” in the eyes of her fellow Canadians. So that we might benefit from an intellectually honest discussion of important issues.
And yet she was deemed too “controversial” to receive the Order of Canada. Apparently an intellectually honest discussion of the issues is not what the liberal-left wants. Perhaps they can’t handle it.
This further proves the scurrilous, secret, liberal-left-led mission to award radical extremist abortionist and abortion mill operator Henry Morgentaler —on Canada Day no less— was a complete political travesty. It’s perfidy of the highest order.
It’s an absolute Canadian disgrace.

Let’s get a couple of things straight: (1) abortion is not solely about “religion”...
1. I’ve stated and re-stated this fact for years, here at PTBC: Abortion is the most disgusting, most egregious thing ever thought of by humans.
I’ve never, ever quoted a passage from the Bible, nor made any reference between abortion and Christianity. Never. No, not once. Ever. Not that there’s anything wrong with quoting passages from the Bible. I’m a Christian, yes (and as a matter of fact, that may well be the first time I’ve said that here, preferring to keep people guessing if I’m actually a Muslim!).
The media and the pro-aborts universally try to marginalize and pigeon-hole pro-lifers as “Christians”, as if they think that will score points with Canadians (and on the CBC web site as I’ve documented, extend that bigoted nonsense with hateful, extremely intolerant and actually full-on hate-mongering and anti-Christian language and utter intolerance, the likes of which should really be dealt with by the RCMP, since the CBC and its moderators have apparently joined the lowly ranks of their own readers, whose attitudes they helped breed (—oh! Good word!)).
But sadly for them and their hideous double-whammy anti-Christian and pro-abortion agenda, it’s not just Christians who are pro-life (and by the way, the vast majority of Canadians are Christians), it’s all manner of Canadians. For all manner of reasons. Some “moral”, some “scientific”, some “logical”, some “common sense”, and yes, some “Christian” and some even have a little of all of the above. And everybody knows that. So why do they keep trotting out Catholic Ministers and “members of the religious right” (and at the CBC, spewing hate and imploring folks to hate them)?
So sad that the pro-aborts attempt to foist this intellectually dishonest crap on Canadians. Especially the media. It’s like they’re fascists.
SIDEBAR: Canada’s constitution begins: “Whereas Canada is founded upon the principles that recognize the supremacy of God…”.
2..
The Conservative Party of Canada supports abortion. No, not just “limited” abortions, or just abortions that are performed prior to 106 weeks, or whatever. They support all abortions. Limitless abortions. Taxpayer paid, limitless abortions. They even passed a “constitutional’ resolution at their convention saying as much. To wit: 58. Abortion Legislation: A Conservative Government will not support any legislation to regulate abortion.”
That’s one of the reasons I’m not a member of the Conservative Party, nor even any “Tories” blog group or club. I’m a conservative.
So if you’re looking for a connection between me, Christianity, and the Conservative Party of Canada, re-aim your weapon. You keep missing. Try “Hitler” again. That’s always fun.
And if you’re looking for a party to vote for and are pro-abortion, then vote Conservative.
Peace out, hippies.

Pro-life rally against Morgentaler award draws a THOUSAND; doubles prediction of 500
Double the expected turnout? You’d think that would be news. But it’s not. CBC Newsworld is all over “road rage” and “how to avoid getting struck by lightning”. Even though it was well-attended by the media, including the CBC as I pointed out earlier. Even the folks who organized it predicted only 500 would show up. Still, the media reports what they want you to know.
A Thousand Attend Ottawa Rally Demanding Order of Canada to Abortionist be Revoked
“Revoke the Award and Change Advisory Council,” say Protestors
OTTAWA, July 9, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - “Revoke the award, absolutely no question - but it is not enough,” said spokesperson Angelina Steenstra. Today, in front of the Governor General’s residence, a thousand people gathered to protest the Order of Canada award to Henry Morgentaler, and the conflictive interest with the revocation process.
Although cloudy, hot and humid, no rain fell on the demonstrators who held signs reading: REVOKE, “We Desire A Better Country” and “Henry Morgentaler made a killing off our generation please don’t honor him”. Banners read: “Abortion is a crime against humanity.”
The crowd was calm and subdued. There was a significant media presence as well. ...

ANOTHER Order of Abortion Appreciation* award returned in disgust
UPDATED several times with examples of ingenious comments on the CBC web site from their CBC kids!
The Left’s CBC, because it purports to be a vital news outfit, is sort of forced by necessity to report it, which is delightful to me.
Former lieutenant-governor returns Order of Canada in protest
“I’ve sent a note to the prime minister and to the Governor General saying that since Dr. Morgentaler is now a member of the order, I’m returning my insignia and no longer want to be part of the order,”
Mid-post UPDATE:
A CBC.ca reader comment on this article that stood out for me so far:
Fudgeman9999 wrote:
Posted 2008/07/09 at 9:08 AM ET...Another example of religious intolerance. The al-queda are not the only dangerous religion group. They are all crazy.
Delightful. And I love the reference to “intolerance”, the irony of which went right over the CBC-luva’s tiny head. Unless you’re an atheist like the CBC commenter, you’re a terrorist. CBC approves the comment.
One CBC commenter says that Catholics are “cult-like supporters”. CBC approves that one.
This one is a double-double:
CalvinMcMaster wrote:
Posted 2008/07/09 at 10:48 AM ETBring on the returns…any other right wing catholic nut want to turn theirs in???
Right wing and Catholic go hand-in-hand? Wow. That’s a new one. Whatever: they’re “nuts”. CBC allows this sort of nation-uniting sentiment.
And note that the reasons given for the return of his award say nothing —absolutely nothing— about whatever faith — Christian or otherwise— he might believe in. He simply states that Morgentaler getting the award goes against his morals. But the rabidly, militantly atheist and ever so tolerant CBC kids launch their little preemptive anti-Christian war just in case. The CBC loves it.
This next one seems to advocate the notion that Christians (well, “religious people”) are a threat to us all, and maybe I’m reading this wrong, but killing all religious people (particularly Christians, clearly) would be in our best interest. The CBC approves it.
JOHNSTONE wrote:
Posted 2008/07/09 at 12:03 AM ETGee all the religious nut cases are coming out now…
I love how an organization that’s been responsible for so much hate and suffering in the world can pretend to act to sanctimonious.
People need to make up and understand this real threat to intelligent societies by religious groups on society. They are well funded, well connected (the own the cabinet), and they are militant. Lets fight to have these nut cases driven back to the stone age where they belong !!!
Here’s a “pro-choice”—spot the irony—liberal woman showin’ us some of the liberal love and tolerance (and outright fascism):
Celtica wrote:
Posted 2008/07/09 at 12:44 AM ETSimple Solution to the Whole Debate: OUTLAW RELIGION.
I know, sounds drastic but seriously, if the govt suddenly made it illegal to practive religion in the country, then seized everything owned by all religious cults (Catholic, Muslim, Judaism, Protestant etc) in this country they would be rolling in cash, then give the money (which is why all these fake religion are supposed to exist for in the first place): to the poor.
Would be a solution….better then some child molesting freak in a black dress with gaudy jewelry telling us how to live out lives!
But that was approved so I guess it must be a “Canadian Value”, since it’s the CBC.
The CBC kids aren’t just hateful, and rabidly and militantly intolerant of Christians or pro-lifers, they also openly hate old folks, to the point where they find them and their actions “meaningless”. (And the CBC approves of that):

Meanwhile, at liberalvision - CTV.ca division - I was shocked and amazed at the headline about the pro-life rally this afternoon in Ottawa in “honor” of Morgentaler. The CTV actually called it a PRO-LIFE rally! PRO-LIFE!
Not a “Religious Zealots Rally”, or a “Bunch o’ Christians…”, nor a “Catholic Priest-organized…”, or a “Rally of the ‘Religious Right’”, or an “Anti-Choicers” rally , or an “Anti-Women”, nor even an “Anti-Abortion” rally.
I don’t know what came over them.

UPDATE (9:14 AM PT):
CBC Newsworld is not covering the pro-life rally which is taking place at this time. “We’ll find out how to deal with road rage”! Also something about cell phones, and “how to avoid lightning bolts”.
UPDATE (9:23 AM PT):
Correction—CBC blinked. A tiny snippet of coverage was offered… with a lovely, buttery explanation as to why Morgentaler was awarded —indeed, why it was justified.
* “Order of Canada” has been officially changed to “Order of Abortion Appreciation”. See PTBC Lexicon for more information.

PTBC officially changes name of Order of Canada
I’m going to refer to the “Order of Canada” as the “Order of Abortion Acceptance”, since it was a de facto order on Canada Day that Canadians accept abortion, and that we deem it as yet another one of what the liberals call their (slash) our “Canadian Values”. (In fact it’s not just about tolerating or accepting their love for abortion, it’s about officially celebrating it as a nation, isn’t it? So I’m actually being quite restrained.
I didn’t really change anything, of course. Liberals did. Much as they did “mom and dad”, “marriage”, and “family”. And, perhaps, “Canada”.
So all you folks who hold an “Order of Abortion Acceptance”, congrats! Hope you don’t mind the li’l change! It’s “progressive”!
UPDATE (Tuesday July 8):
Having slept on it, maybe “Order of Abortion Appreciation” would be better. Because it’s more than mere “acceptance”. I’m pretty sure it will be shortened to just “Order of Abortion”.

At least two MORE Order of Canada medals being returned
One written about in a letter to the editor:
Why I’m returning my uncle’s Order of Canada
It is with the greatest difficulty and regret that I am returning to the government of Canada a gift that I received from my uncle, E.M. Culliton. A former chief justice of the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal, he was a recipient of the Companion of the Order of Canada for work that he devoted his life to with honour and dignity. Shortly before his death he gave me his box of medals. Pointing to the white enameled gold snowflake, he said: “I am giving this to you because I know that you will know what to do with it.”
Uncle Ted understood the potential of every human being. He would never accept that one person was of less value than another and his ability to relate to children was what really made him a great man. I am returning his hard-earned medal to the government of Canada as it would no longer have meaning to his sense of morality and values.
This award has turned to dust and ashes, meaningless and empty. More important is the reward that comes from embracing all human life from conception to natural death with its joys, sorrows, misfortunes and triumphs.
—John Culliton Poston, Mission, B. C.
This one is documented at LifeSiteNews.com:
Order of Canada to be Returned Publicly - Madonna House Returns Founder’s Award
“Catherine Doherty was honoured to receive this award in 1976”OTTAWA, July 7, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Representatives from Madonna House, a Catholic community based in Combermere, Ontario, will make the journey to Ottawa Tuesday morning to return the Order of Canada medal awarded to its founder, Catherine Doherty.
The move is in response to the awarding of one of Canada’s highest honours to Dr. Henry Morgentaler, as announced by the Governor General’s Office on July 1, 2008.
Catherine Doherty (August 15, 1896 - December 14, 1985) was a pioneer of social justice and an internationally acclaimed speaker. In addition to founding the community of Madonna House, she was a prolific writer and best-selling author of dozens of books. She was awarded the Order of Canada in 1976 in recognition of “a lifetime of devoted services to the underprivileged of many nationalities, both in Canada and abroad.” Her cause for canonization as a saint was opened by Bishop Brendan O’Brien, then bishop of the diocese of Pembroke, Ontario, in 2000.
Hat tip to Paul Westhaver and LifeSite for the noticing the second one, which for some mysterious reason the mainstream media didn’t catch.
Keep ‘em coming.

Followup: The Obnoxious Garth Turner and old Liberal tricks
It’s just Monday morning but we already we have our PTBC Quote Of The Week.
“This is an old Liberal trick: Equate the national interest with Liberal policies, then question the loyalty of anyone who disagrees.”
It’s by brilliant National Post columnist Lorne Gunter, who writes today about the buffoon-like blog writings of Liberal MP Garth Turner who, as I wrote yesterday, oozed brain poo over the weekend, revealing a bit more of the Liberal Party hidden agenda. Lorne Gunter’s column is appropriately headlined “The obnoxious Garth Turner”.
I liked it not just because it’s a spot-on analysis in handy bumper-sticker form (it’s not as easy as you think to capsulize Liberal-Left talking points into Ritz cracker-size bon mots). It’s also because it speaks to lots of issues that sensible non-Liberal Party automaton Canadians are grappling with, not the least of which is the liberals’ Morgentaler award fiasco.
Think about how they—liberals—have tried to subvert honesty and true national sentiment and foist upon us Morgentaler, and what he and all liberals believe in —abortion— as an official “national interest”; a made-up and enforced through officialdom icon of official “national pride”. Abortion is, as Liberals so often describe it, a “Canadian Value”, to their way of thinking, and if Canadians didn’t already know that, then dammit they’ll tell us, and make it official! They know what’s good for us. Then by golly, the debate can be over, and the science: settled. (Sound familiar?)
My own blog entry about the legend in his own mind Garth Turner referenced the fact that Turner laughably stretched credulity (even further if that’s possible) by prefacing his plaintive wail of a but… but… but… blog entry with a photo of big ol’ Canadian flag. He seemed to be trying to convey that remarks like his occur simply because he so truly loves the entire country. His thoughts are “Canadian Values”.
It’s like a sickness.

Wisdom From The Roots #6337: petition to rescind Morgentaler award
As I breathlessly mentioned yesterday, there’s an online petition going on right now to present to the liberals’ Governor-General division with regard to the liberals’ Order of Canada division and its liberal-appointed committee’s personal ideology-based decision to award the Order of Canada to their abortionist-in-chief, Morgentaler, abortion hero.
In the first 24 hours, over 2,000 Canadians signed up (just on the English-language one—there’s one in French, and one for Americans too). I reported:
It’s growing by the minute. SIGN IT! ... UPDATE: it’s up to 2116 in the few minutes since I posted this. Sign it! ... UPDATE as I go to bed: 2180! ... UPDATE next morning (Sat. July 5 2008 8:50 AM PT): 2629!.
Anyway, you can sign it and make a comment. Some of them are absolutely spot-on and emotional and exemplifies the degree to which this disgraceful decision by those liberals has struck a negative chord in this country.
Here’s one of those comments from a Canadian named Ken, from Ontario (signer #2623), which I liked because he sounds like me, (making him very smart and oh so quotable):
I gave up on Canada a long time ago. This awarding of the order of Canada to the criminal Henry Morgentaler confirms my long held belief that there is morally no difference between Canada and the Soviet Union. They too honored their “heroes”, heroes such as Stalin (9 million killed in the Ukraine) and Lenin, the murderous revolutionary; Canada is dead. Morgentaler is despicable, but those who voted to award him this “honor” are contemptible, for they knew this would be highly offensive to millions of Canadians. But, we dont matter do we? After all they are the establishment, we are merely tolerated—so we can pay taxes and contribute financially to the corrupt fascist-liberal culture of death they are building. If by the grace of God we can ever leave Canada, my wife and I are planning to renounce our Canadian citizenship.
Way to go, liberals.

Morgentaler award roundly PANNED by thinkers across the entire country
John Jalsevac of LifeSiteNews.com has done an excellent job of assembling several of the recent columnist articles from across Canada with regard to the Morgentaler - Order of Canada farce.
There is one “cross posted” item here, as we will now also feature Theo Caldwell’s regular column here at PTBC (just posted it). Missing is Barbara Kay’s excellent column entitled “Honouring a remorseless extremist” posted here at PTBC; and one late entry from today, also posted here, by Susan Martinuk, called “Women who have abortions face numerous health issues”. And a heads-up: Our David Warren will write about it on Sunday. Find it here.
Highlights from Media Comments on the Morgentaler Order of Canada Fiasco
“a sign of moral decay led in part by a remorseless extremist.”
By John Jalsevac
July 4, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A political cartoon in a Canadian newspaper shows a can labeled “Canada’s abortion debate.” A hand holding the trademark “snowflake,” the physical Order of Canada award, is depicted applying the award to the top of the can, in the manner of a can opener. The message is clear: by giving Morgentaler the Order of Canada, the Governor General has opened wide the tightly closed lid of Canada’s abortion debate.
Canada’s newspapers and airwaves are awash with articles, interviews and programs discussing the pros and cons of abortion, and debating whether or not Canada’s arch-abortionist should have been awarded the country’s highest civic honour.
The following are some highlights from just a few of the articles on the issue appearing in Canada’s newspapers:
Who’s ready to return their snowflake? by columnist Colby Cosh - National Post [Joel mentioned today]
“[Morgentaler’s] admission to the Order will not convince one person that he is right, nor diminish the ardour of his opponents. It can only create the impression that the Order is being used to argue for a particular position in a controversy, rather than to reflect genuinely shared values. And if this becomes its function, Canadians will be entirely right to hold it in contempt.”
Send back the pin by columnist John Robson - Ottawa Citizen
(http://www.canada.com/ottawacitizen/columnists/story.html?id...)“The point here is that the real reason for supporting his award isn’t that [Morgentaler’s] controversial, it’s that he’s an abortionist. And it’s no excuse for pushing it through that he’s unwell and it cannot be given posthumously. If there is no afterlife there’s little point rushing to collect attractive coffin decorations and if there is, that little white lapel pin will not help him face his accusers on the other side.
“Sorry, was that divisive? Well, so was this award, which amounts to endorsing his position on abortion in a deliberately offensive manner…
“Feminist Judy Rebick said ‘For me, it’s got a symbolic importance that it was announced on Canada Day.’ Exactly. It symbolized a slap in the face from official Canada to millions of Canadians for whom widespread abortion is a transcendent horror.
“If you have an Order of Canada, send it back.”
A Majestic Bellyflop by columnist Michael Harris - Ottawa Sun
“By elevating Henry Morgentaler, Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin and Co. have performed a majestic belly flop. They have bestowed a national honour on a mere personal favourite. They have also reminded us that the soft underbelly of the Establishment in Canada continues to be liberal, smugly self-satisfied, and contemptuous of those lacking in cultural evolution…
“The tasteless ostentation of their zeal to put a boot to the throat of the pro-life movement has done nothing but re-energize a bitter debate over the most basic issues of personal freedom and powers of life and death. Morgentaler’s critics have already seen his public honour as a sign of moral decay led in part by a remorseless extremist. Not exactly the kind of emotions the Order of Canada was designed to inspire.
“As a caller to my talk show put it, anyone who gets an Order of Canada should be able to have a school named after them. Henry Morgentaler High? Hmmm.”
Morgentaler is no hero—women who don’t abort are by columnist Naomi Lakritz - Calgary Herald
“The melodramatic mantle of heroism that the pro-choice side drapes about Morgentaler’s shoulders is intolerably phoney. Heroes rescue people. Morgentaler, who has helped make it open season on the unborn, has rescued no one and condemned thousands…
“No - the real heroes will never get an Order of Canada. They’re the unsung women who, finding themselves with an unexpected or unwanted pregnancy, take responsibility for their actions, and either alter their plans to include a baby in their lives or give the baby up for adoption. They’re true heroes because they understand that there is a profound difference between life - and mere lifestyle.”
Today’s math quiz: How many deaths goes into an award for Morgentaler? blog post by Karen Hawthorne - National Post
“I get the feeling Dr. Morgentaler has a selective respect for the rights of others. The rights of women who agree with his views are paramount. The rights of unborn children are non-existent. The beliefs of women who disagree with him are to be dismissed; any religion which advocates against his views is to be disregarded; the qualms of those Canadians appalled at the carnage that has flowed from his work are to be ignored. I suspect - and I’m just guessing - that what’s important to Dr. Morgentaler is his beliefs alone. Others’ beliefs are inconsequential. Maybe this callousness is what lets him so easily take life away from so many.
“Here’s someone whose life’s achievement is in enabling women to abort their children and justify it to themselves as something other than what it appears to be. One or two other people in history have deliberately set in motion the mass termination of so many helpless lives, but outside of war they aren’t treated with high regard. Certainly I don’t think they’d qualify for the Order of Canada.”
Morgentaler’s Order of Canada a symbol of moral decay by columnist Ian Hunter - National Post
“[Morgentaler] will not be forgotten, nor should he be, nor the evil he has perpetrated. But the greater story - even in as pathetic a country as Canada - is not his, it is Humanae Vitae (1968) and the final triumph of life over the culture of death.
“The words of Pope Paul VI in Humanae Vitae will be pondered by those who come after us (assuming that there are any) when the Order of Canada has been mercifully and deservedly forgotten.
“‘To [governments] is committed the responsibility of safeguarding the common good … Never allow the morals of your people to be undermined. Never tolerate those practices which are opposed to the natural law of God.’”
“And - might I add - do not honour men without honour.”
Every child a gift from God opinion column by Theo Caldwell - National Post [And PTBC!]
“At my age, and with my middling skills, I have not been graced with the time or talent to have attained such a prestigious award. But if I had, and if the same folks who honoured me then chose to celebrate a man for snuffing out little lives, I like to think I would waste no time in telling them where to stick their snowflake. I was proud that my father removed his own hard-earned Order of Canada immediately upon hearing of Morgentaler’s accolade.”
Unmasking what lies behind ‘pro-choice’ column by Stephanie Gray - Calgary Herald
“If this is the first time Canadians are feeling shame about celebrating Canada Day, then we have problems.
“People should have been reluctant to celebrate Canada Day back in 1969, when abortion first became legal. The problem to which our limited attention should be drawn is not awarding Henry Morgentaler the Order of Canada, but the genocide of a group of people who are being denied their right to life simply because of their age. Their fate is to be dismembered, disemboweled and decapitated.
“Morgentaler’s award is simply a symptom of a more deeply rooted crisis.”
Politicizing the Order of Canada - Editorial - Calgary Herald
“One could hardly imagine a more divisive gesture than awarding the Order of Canada to Dr. Henry Morgentaler. Canada’s highest honour is typically bestowed upon citizens who by their life and work have earned the widespread respect - and, in a very large number of cases, also the affection - of their fellow countrymen.
“That hardly applies to Morgentaler, however. He may be a hero to one side of Canada’s most controversial issue - abortion - but to the other he is a murderer of unborn babies, a man upon whose hands there is much blood.
“Why, then, would a majority of the order’s advisory council and the Governor General herself choose to mark a day celebrating national unity by deeply offending half the country?”

Hi Joel or anyone involved with PTBC:
I write a weekly column in the Winnipeg Sun and I would be proud to have my column about Morgentaler’s award mentioned or linked to from your blog site. I appreciate all the good work you people do at PTBC..

Erratum:
Mr. Quesnel also let me know he made an error in writing that Morgentaler was appointed as an “officer” to the Order of Canada when in fact he was appointed as a “member”. Mr. Quesnel’s error was only slight, and was purely accidental, in contradistinction to the larger matter.

New website: “OrderofCanada.org” features “Henry Morgentaler, Abortionist”. And that’s it!
Stumbled onto http://orderofcanada.org which features a photo of the pro-abortion advocate and hero to all liberals, H. Morgentaler, and only Morgentaler, with the words, Order of Canada: Henry Morgentaler, Abortionist.
SIDEBAR: How careless and amateurish of the highly-paid minions in the liberals’ government bureaucracy division to neglect the basic Websites-101 necessity of registering their organization with the dot ORG domain when they registered the dot CA! It seems they even forgot the dot COM as it is registered to another citizen.
Clearly the site is someone’s wily way to express what I guess is their impression of what the Order of Canada has been reduced to. This is no doubt a direct result of the keepers of the Order and their proclivity to officially turn it into their personal vehicle to assert and advance their particularly vile liberal-left cultural and political positions on this extremely controversial—rather than shared—Canadian value.
Forever more, when I hear the words “Order of Canada”, I will directly associate it with the pro-abortion culture of death and liberal-left fascists in this country.
The site’s owner is absolutely right to hold the award in contempt, as I do.
I think whoever owns the site should make a snide list of other equally “suitable” recipients from among the throngs of liberal-left, the even further-left socialist hordes, and of course from among the Marxist-erati in Canada. Maybe hang out at tattoo parlors for recipient ideas! Of course it may be hard to avoid duplication between the actual list and the snide satirical one at the site, but new generations of names might come along (provided their moms march their fantastic pregnant bellies right past any neon signs reading “Morgentaler’s Happy ‘Health’ Clinic—now Canadian-people awarded ‘n celebrated!”).
On a more positive note, a list of who in all sincerity should be awarded the prize in order to bring prestige back to it might also be in order.
