Ontario “human rights” jackasses whine (like all girls whine)
Ontario “human rights” jackasses dismissed the ridiculous case filed by the Canadian Islamic Congress and a group of law students against Maclean’s and author Mark Steyn, citing the fact that it doesn’t have jurisdiction; but then slams Maclean’s and Mark Steyn anyway.
The official comments (and apparently the official instructions on how you, Canadians, are to think) made by the “chief commissioner”, of the liberals’ Ontario “Human Rights” Commission, Barbara Hall, are among the most horrible things I’ve ever read in my life.
“When the media writes, it should exercise great caution that it’s not promoting stereotypes that will adversely impact on identifiable groups ... I think one needs to be very careful when one speaks in generalities, that in fact one is speaking factually about all the people in a particular group. ... It is the Commission’s view that the media has a responsibility to engage in fair and unbiased journalism. Bias includes both an unfair and one-sided portrayal of an issue as well as prejudicial attitudes towards individuals and groups.”
—Ontario “human rights” “chief commissioner”, Barbara Hall
Rights body dismisses Maclean’s case
That’s total bull.
Tarek Fatah, founder of the Muslim Canadian Congress, however, said that for the Commission “to refer to Maclean’s magazine and journalists as contributing to racism is bullshit, if you can use that word.”

Yes, you can use that word.

Jonathan Kay at the National Post:
...As a journalist, I found this part particularly chilling:
“It is the Commission’s view that the media has a responsibility to engage in fair and unbiased journalism. Bias includes both an unfair and one-sided portrayal of an issue as well as prejudicial attitudes towards individuals and groups.”
Actually, the National Post — like Maclean’s and every other media outlet — has no such responsibility — except inasmuch as we want to be respected, and our product bought, by as many people as possible. If we choose to be “unfair,” or simply to have an opinion that some people, or even everyone, disagrees with, that’s our right. We’ll pay the price in lost readers and advertisers.
But clearly, the OHRC doesn’t trust the marketplace of ideas…
—Jonathan Kay
Hey, we want to be in the censorship business, too!
Marc Steyn:
~ Meanwhile, south of the border, America Alone - the New York Times bestseller and Canadian Number One bestseller that inspired the “flagrantly Islamophobic” Ontario hate crime - hits bookstores this week in paperback and with a new introduction. “As I’ve been saying for a year now,” said Glenn Beck on Tuesday, “you’ve got to read this book” - and, as Dennis Miller put it on Monday, it’s the best book of the last decade. On its first day out in paperback, America Alone came flying back on to the bestseller charts like “Han Solo at the end of Star Wars”. “Once one gets past the red-necking chest-thumping verbosity”, it’s really not bad, says the latest of over 400 reviewers at Amazon. The new cover has been noted up north. And it’s highly recommended “for anyone who needs a good jolt into reality, and a good joke to boot”.
