Fox News CEO on America: “turns out everybody’s trying to get in, and nobody’s trying to get out.”

Written by Joel Johannesen on Monday October 08 2007 at 10:39 AM

image  Good interview with Roger Ailes, CEO of my favorite channel, Fox News Channel (now unbanned in Canada—call your satellite or cable company!), in Wall Street Journal.  I like Fox News Channel for about 30 good reasons, but among the top reasons is that they’re clearly on America’s side.

Fox News is launching a new channel this month called Fox Business Network, which will compete against CNBC, which has a near monopoly on that market.  I’m all over that because I know they’ll take America’s side on that channel as well, by, say, actually admitting that capitalism works—maybe even being proud of America and its relatively free-market capitalist system (at least for now) —and by acknowledging that for that reason and many others, America is the richest country in the world and is a force for good, not evil, as many liberals love to portray it.

I liked this answer to a question about how Fox News Channel accomplished a 41% increase in operating income in the last quarter despite waning ratings for cable news:

Mr. Ailes: Well, the ratings aren’t off much….You’d be surprised. I get hundreds of emails a day from American people saying, “God, you’re the only thing we watch.” So, we feel a real responsibility to get the story straight and balance the story in some ways….

When I see something [in the news] particularly horrible about America that I think is a little out of proportion to what is actually going on, I call up the desk and say, “Do you have any pictures of people lined up at the border trying to get out?” They say, “What do you mean?” I say, “I just watched that, and hell, we’ve got to get out of here, America’s a terrible place. We need to get out fast. There must be guys stacked up at the airport trying to get out of here.” No. It turns out everybody’s trying to get in, and nobody’s trying to get out. We’ve got to keep that perspective in mind when you cover the news. It doesn’t mean you don’t cover the bad news about America. You do. It means you don’t get up in the morning hating your country.
