“Mainstream” org in Canada suggests gov takeover of entire oil and gas industry, forcibly if need be
I read a recent report put out by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives —an extreme left-wing “think tank” where, as I always remind readers, the “alternative” is actually socialism or full-on communism; and that the organization is chock-a-block full of far-left economists and political agitprops. Or as the CBC refers to them when they have them on as guest “experts”, as they do 800 times per week, “the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives”. (This is in juxtaposition to their description of the Fraser Institute as the “right-wing Fraser Institute” or the “conservative-friendly Fraser Institute”, on the basis that they stand for nothing more than protecting what’s left of the freedom and free enterprise which built our nation).
While conservatives like myself are informed by history, experience, common sense, Judeo-Christian principles, and the proven science of free-markets, free-enterprise, and freedom generally (among other things), the Liberals and the you’ve got to be kidding party are informed by the CCPA (as well as the like-minded Daily Kos, Huffington Post, Media Matters, David Suzuki Inc., Sean Penn, and of course The People’s Voice and the CBC’s George Stroumboulopoulos). As are the Canadian lamestream media. So what the CCPA has to say is important, since what they say has a habit of being absorbed into the latest “principles” (heh!) and agendas of those leftard parties, and their media divisions… and the new Fabian Socialist campaign begins. Usually using specious socialism-with-a-happy-face language like…
...In their report, which suggests that the government take over the entire Canadian oil and gas industry, by hook or by crook, but which keeps referring to it as a “public interest sector” move, and “converting” the entire means of production into one “serving the public interest”, instead of calling it, say, “communism”, or, say, a “Che Guevara, Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez-style seizure of property from private citizens and their private enterprises” to “transform Canada into a full socialist/communist state”, um, “run by them”. This reminds me of their brethren in the social left who refer to “reproductive rights” and “reproductive justice” and “choice”, instead of calling it “abortion” or “taking the choice and every God-given right away from helpless, innocent, pre-born human lives”. Or when they say “public option” when discussing their “health care” plans. Or when they add “and early learning” to the end of their call for a “national, universal, government child care” (and just before) “program”. Or when they try to fake you out using the term “corporation” to describe government divisions like the CBC, or the Insurance “Corporation” of BC.
Here’s some excerpts of the report with my notes in communist red and additional bolding and yellow highlighting:
PAGE 5
This paper is aimed at promoting a discussion of the oil and gas industry in Canada, and specifically the prospect of transforming its mandate to one aimed at serving the public interest.
PAGE 6
[And just in case they decide to buy the assets instead of simply “expropriating” them…] The up-front payment would be on the order of $330 billion(Cdn) to purchase the firms producing a majority of Canada’s oil and natural gas output, based on market capitalization in mid- November 2009. Changes in circumstances could alter the up-front price in the future. [Note that this 1/3-trillion-dollar “purchase” would not necessarily be “optional” on the part of the shareholders —read on.]
Page 18
Governments have always had the legal power to acquire property, either through voluntary or involuntary transfer. The latter is termed expropriation in Canada (condemnation or eminent domain in the U.S., and compulsory purchase in the U.K.) [...and in those countries, it also doesn’t usually involve COMMUNISTS, and their takeover of entire industries and the means of production]. Expropriation is used frequently, for instance to obtain land for roads or utilities. Expropriation is normally carried out with compensation at fair market value. In Canada, all three levels of government can expropriate. All provincial and territorial legislatures and Parliament have passed statutes guiding the exercise of that power, which is granted in hundreds of other statutes. And they have the constitutional authority to pass further statutes enabling expropriation, if and as needed. In some instances, legislation even enables private parties to expropriate.
[...]
The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms likely would not restrict the ability of governments to convert the oil and gas sector to a public-interest sector. The Charter’s section 7 protection of the right to life does not apply to corporations [or, they hope, pre-born babies]. And the section 2(d) protection of freedom of association only applies to association, not the ability to undertake the business of an association.
PAGE 26
Public education and outreach efforts would be needed in order to inform the public about the change, and also counteract any disinformation circulated by the current industry and their allies. [Hey I wonder if they mean: get prepared to call detractors “racists” and “Nazis” and “teabaggers” and “liars”!]
How come the crack reporters at the already socialism-reliant, state-owned CBC don’t question Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff and the you’ve got to be kidding party’s Jack Layton about whether they intend to follow the suggestions offered here by their left brains at the CCPA?
