PTBC J-Log
A conservative OPINION blog --with bite. OPINION by Joel Johannesen.Friday, July 25, 2008
Obama: But I wasn’t in charge back then…
I liked the Wall Street Journal’s editorial today on yesterday’s speech by Barrack Hussein Obama in Berlin.
For our money, the best line in Barack Obama’s speech yesterday in Berlin came in the form of a quote from Ernst Reuter, the city’s mayor during the period of the Soviet blockade and the American airlift, in 1948:
“But in the darkest hour,” said Sen. Obama, “the people of Berlin kept the flame of hope burning. The people of Berlin refused to give up. And on one fall day, hundreds of thousands of Berliners came here, to the Tiergarten, and heard the city’s mayor implore the world not to give up on freedom. ‘There is only one possibility,’ he said. ‘For us to stand together united until this battle is won…. The people of Berlin have spoken. We have done our duty, and we will keep on doing our duty’.” This, from a U.S. Senator whose consistent message to the people of Baghdad, a similarly besieged city, also dependent on America’s protection, has been, in effect, to give up.

I also liked Laura Ingraham’s E-Blast newsletter quip:
OBAMA DITCHES TROOPS, WORKS OUT INSTEAD: “Barack Obama will not be coming to us,” a spokesperson for the US military hospital in Landstuhl announced. “I don’t know why.” Well, Barack Obama clearly has his priorities in the right place during his time in Germany. A planned visit with wounded U.S. troops at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center was abruptly canceled today, but “citizen of the world” Obama still managed to squeeze in a workout at (where else?) the Ritz Carlton in Berlin. The campaign’s pathetic excuse for the change? Obama adviser Robert Gibbs tried to spin the situation faster than Barack Obama on his elliptical machine, claiming it “would be inappropriate to make a stop to visit troops at a U.S. military facility as part of a trip funded by the campaign.” Wow, how ethical of him.
I have a feeling Obama cancelled the trip to see the wounded soldiers because he’d hoped they could be counted on to say things like “Wo, dude, like get us outta here and end this awful war because like look what happened to me…”, when in fact they’ve been known to say things like, “I know my left foot is blown off but I can’t wait to re-join my team and get back in the game and fight…and win… and never stop until we do win…”. Because that’s really contrary to Obama’s take on things.
