PTBC J-Log
A conservative OPINION blog --with bite. OPINION by Joel Johannesen.Wednesday, June 03, 2009
Followup #3—Shaw Cable / Star Choice says: “few watch Fox News”; yet “thousands of complaints”
A reader emailed to update me on his complaint to Shaw Direct (what used to be called Star Choice) satellite service, and its agenda-ridden choice to suddenly make Fox News Channel an “opt-in” channel even for those who already opted-in, and their ridiculous claim that it’s (alternatively) because of “the great unrest among the majority of our customers”, or because “thousands” have complained about Fox News, (and yet “nobody has complained about the CBC”), or any of a number of reader-reported excuses, none of which make the slightest sense whatsoever ...
NOTE: For context and background and to catch up, read these previous blog entries:

He caught them in a great big bit of agenda-ridden bullcrap, and included his email to Shaw/Star-Choice. Here’s an excerpt:

[...] I called your “representative” immediately, and indicated that I wanted to receive Fox News.I then asked the representative why Fox News was being censored (removed from the guide). His response was “there are few people who watch Fox News so it wasn’t a big deal”. He then suggested that I “go to “cbc.ca” to read about the story in question”. He then added that “thousands and thousands of people complained about Fox News”.
How many people complained about Fox News to Star Choice?
How is it possible that thousands and thousands of people can complain about Fox News when according to the “representative” only a few people watch the network?
[...]
Meh. “Thousands”, “few”; potato, potahhto.
I’m going to switch to either Bell TV, Telus TV, or our local cable company, Delta Cable (owned by Eastlink), all of which (eastern Canadians can add Rogers to that list) happily offer Fox News Channel without consumers having to “opt-in”, as Shaw customers now have to, much as they have to with Shaw’s many xxx hardcore gay and straight porn channels.
In fact it reminded me of this great newspaper ad that Delta Cable ran when the then-Liberal government finally unbanned Fox News Channel from Canada (with the help of extreme pressure from PTBC and its readers), and allowed it to be broadcast in what I always thought was our free and free-speech country.
They refer to “Ottawa”, but of course that was the LIBERALS
I wrote it up with this blog entry at the time:
Fox News Channel hitting Canadian suburbia
The Liberals were, at the time, trying desperately to remain in power, and were actually desperate enough to court the conservatives of Canada; and by unbanning Fox News Channel, they were of course simply trying to appease us. MPs were always able to watch Fox News Channel in the Parliament buildings (only in the Parliament buildings), so they knew it allowed conservative thoughts to leak out into the consciousness of viewers, and that literally freaked them out, since Canadians had never experienced that before, and that arrangement was working out wonderfully.

I of course voted Conservative anyway, only to be told recently by the genius Conservative “strategist” Geoff Norquay and Minister of Defense and TV, Peter McKay, that Canadians should cancel their Fox News Channel subscriptions, thereby fostering this obedient move by Shaw/Star-Choice.
