Let’s all get “appalled” at the right thing shall we?

**UPDATED**

The BC government is legislating a contract to keep teachers in the classroom.  Once again—just like the state-run CBC labor union troubles, we’re seeing fun with state-owned, state-run organizations and state-employees squabbling over our tax dollars and who gets control—in this case over our children and their education.  For once I take the side of government.

VANCOUVER (CP) – Teachers across the country are appalled at the B.C. government for imposing a legislated contract on the province’s teachers, says the president of the Canadian Teachers’ Federation.

“We are staunchly opposed and over 210,000 teachers across Canada are united with their B.C. colleagues in this battle,” said Winston Carter, a school administrator in Gander, N.L. “What’s happening in British Columbia can happen anywhere in Canada and all 17 (teacher) member organizations are focused on British Columbia and we’re there to help in any way we can as soon as is requested.” […]

That’s nice.

I’m also absolutely “appalled”, but not at the BC government.  I’m appalled at most teachers’ unions, who I believe are often little more than political centers of Marxism—particularly in the case of the BC teachers’ union which is scarcely more than an extreme left-wing political party.  I think they should be forced to register as a political party or at least as a sponsor of a political party (unfortunately for the BC Teachers Federation, the NDP is the most left-wing that has any chance in an election, so that’s who they back).  I personally had to register with the BC government during the last provincial election.  Because of a blog.  Yes, that’s correct.

I think the whole nation should be appalled at most teachers’ unions across Canada.

I’d like to see more private schools and charter schools.  I’d like to see more Christian and Jewish-based schools sprout up, for example. The government/union monopoly on education is what’s really appalling here.

UPDATE October 5 2005 6:28 AM PDT
I found a link that interested me and I’m sure will pique the interest of millions and millions of smart caring parents.

The Pacific Research Institute page on charter schools.  I also follow Joanne Jacobs excellent blog on education and the value of charter schools and such alternatives.  Every time there’s a teacher’s dispute I’m reminded of how we need to keep advancing away from our current system of government-run schools and Marxist labor unions who think they run our government-run schools.  Lots of like-minded teachers log in there and post comments to her blog entries that help expose the lousy teaching, liberal bias, various pitfalls, and political traps that are public schools and public school teachers—and they’re talking about the U.S.  Multiply it threefold here.  She was once kind enough to share the first pages of her soon-to-be-released book, Our School: The Inspiring Story of Two Teachers, One Big Idea and the School That Beat the Odds with us a few months ago.  Do a search for “Jacobs” here and you’ll find lots of blog entries that point to her.
