He said:
“It is not possible to achieve our Kyoto targets unless we target Kyoto.”
That’s Ken Dryden in French during yesterday’s leadership debate.
On the federal-provincial fiscal imbalance issue, Liberal Carolyn Bennett offered in French: “It’s not possible, little arithmetic lesson.”
So much is not possible with liberals. I keep trying to tell you.
All this from a story today at cnews.canoe.ca. I like Canadian Press reporter Alexander Panetta’s description of Bennett’s other remarks:
Even the translator on one English-language network was confused. While Bennett spoke about public confidence in the health-care system, here’s what the translation sounded like on TV:
“Trust, trust…”
A long, awkward pause ensued and concluded with a final word: “Trust.”
Of course he praises Stephane Dion for his mastery of French. On the other hand, half the time, I’m not sure what Dion’s talking about when he’s speaking “English”, and I still don’t know what Jean Chretien said all those years.
