“The Liberals’ failure to enforce the accord left Canada far behind…”? Actual quote in newspaper?

I had to read it twice.  Actual facts in an actual mainstream newspaper article, which didn’t promote Liberals and in fact hit them where it hurt— right in their Dion.

Proposed environment bill called ‘bad policy’

Liberal legislation could lead to lawsuits: Justice Department

OTTAWA – Opposition legislation designed to enforce Canada’s international obligations under the Kyoto protocol has numerous flaws that could open the door to lawsuits against the federal government, according to new documents released by the Justice Department.

The point-by-point critique, released to CanWest News Service following an access to information request, summarizes the main arguments against Bill C-288, a private members bill pushed through the Commons by opposition parties.

“Bill C-288 is bad law. It imposes an unenforceable obligation,” the briefing notes said. “Bill C-288 is bad policy. Its timelines are not realistic.”

The bill was drafted to try and embarrass the government by forcing it to prepare a plan to meet the requirements of the Kyoto accord, which was signed by the previous Liberal government.

The Liberals’ failure to enforce the accord left Canada far behind in its obligations to cut greenhouse gases, prompting the Conservative administration to declare the targets could no longer be met without triggering serious economic consequences.

The Justice Department report backs up the argument.

Liberal MP Pablo Rodriguez, who tabled Bill C-288, criticized the report, along with a recent Environment Canada study that suggested it would lead to skyrocketing energy prices, massive job losses and a major recession.

“I’ve seen them work against the bill, but I’m still surprised to see how much of tax payers’ money they are investing to fight against this bill,” Mr. Rodriguez said.

I can just hear Liberal MP Pablo Rodriguez muttering, “Hey!  Yooz supposed to back us libs up, you gov’ment staffers!  This ain’t liberal!”
