Email exchange: Dear Sister-of-a-Liberal

Email from a reader looking for answers (and I might add that this sort of email isn’t particularly unusual for me):

Subject: What is going on in Canada?

Dear “Proud to be Canadian”,

I had a phone conversation with my sister who lives outside of Halifax. I was sharing some of the books that I had read, Brigitte Gabriel’s book, Bawer’s book “While Europe Slept”, and Walid Shoebat’s speeches that are posted on youtube.com.

I thought we were having a nice conversation in which we were sharing information, but then I get a follow-up e-mail from her. She says, “ I would like to clarify something before you say anything about our conversation to anyone. Just because I am aware of the terrorist threat and of Islamic history, doesn’t mean I support Bush.”  Then she goes on a Bush bashing rant.

What struck me the most about her e-mail was her seemingly abject fear of anyone getting the impression that she ‘supported’ Bush.  What is going on in Canada? Are there political police that come in the dead of night and take a person away for showing a sliver of acknowledgment that Bush has done anything right? Are Canadians being ostracizes for saying anything positive about the U.S.?

My sister and I grew up in Connecticut. She married a Canadian and has been in Nova Scotia for the last 15+ years.  I am writing from Texas, where I have been living for the last 27+ years. I am so glad to see your website. What is going on in Canada? How many conservatives exist in Canada?

Regards,

Sister-of-a-Liberal

Hi Sister-of-a-Liberal,

You’re experiencing a common occurrence in Canada.  The fear is not the police coming to get them in the dark of night for supporting Bush, although that may well occur on college campuses where they are taught to hate Bush, but rather that they are afraid of being kicked off the cocktail circuit, and not getting a job if word gets out on their Facebook accounts that they aren’t leftists in favor of free limitless taxpayer-funded abortion and gay “marriage”, aren’t against the war on Islamofascists, aren’t anti-American, anti-Christian, and most especially anti-Bush.

Also, as you may know, Canada has a state-owned, state-run media, and its “news” “reporters” are apparently instructed to strictly abide by the far-left liberal media guidebook, particularly the chapter where it explains that the name “Bush” to be said with a visible sneer, an eye-roll if possible, and an audible display of utter disgust in their voices.  In juxtaposition, the words “Hillary” or “Bill Clinton” or “Al Gore” are to be said blithely with a glowing smile and cheery outlook.

While I often say that liberals speak as though everyone in the room agrees with them (a Coulterism), it’s actually true in this case—everyone does.  The competing private “news” networks and mainstream media are all liberal, all the time.  The great Fox News Channel was only recently unbanned in this country (thanks to the huge effort of people like me and my web site), but it was purposely made very difficult for Canadians to actually subscribe to it, while the state-run media is made available to all by Canadian law.  Sort of like in North Korea or Iran.  The other liberal channels are easily available.  Most Canadians hate Fox News because (A) they’re told to by their media and their teachers and (B) Fox News’ affinity for being on America’s side, and for their allowing conservatives to say things in addition to liberals saying things.  This balance is seen as “biased” by Canadian liberals.

So Canadians only know an anti-American, left-wing point of view, which is countered only by a… further left point of view.  They have been taught that being a good, obedient, patriotic Canadian means hating America and particularly President Bush (because aside from being American, he’s a Christian and a conservative).

Thanks for writing!
