Joel shocked: “journalist” to run for Liberals. Astounding. Imagine my surprise. Speechless.

Liberal Frenchman Stephane (“the Green Guru”) Dion “trotted out” (Canadian Press’ own words—bit o’ jealousy?) Jocelyn Coulon, who aside from being a “journalist”, is also a professor.  Imagine that!  A reporter…. and a professor!  Hardly any media reporters or professors are liberals!  If he were an atheist, he’d be perfect for them!

Ex-reporter to run for Liberals in Outremont

Canadian Press

MONTREAL—The federal Liberals have picked a former journalist to run for the party in a Montreal byelection.

Jocelyn Coulon, who is currently a professor at the Universite de Montreal, makes regular appearances on Quebec TV stations to comment on international events.

Liberal Leader Stephane Dion trotted out Coulon at a news conference Friday in the riding of Outremont, which has been vacant since former Liberal transport minister Jean Lapierre quit politics earlier this year.

Coulon predicts Canada’s mission in Afghanistan will be at the centre of the next general election as well as the upcoming byelection.

He called on Prime Minister Stephen Harper to tell NATO allies that Canada will not extend its mission after February 2009.

[…]

Dion said Coulan entered politics to help stop the Conservative government’s “Republican-Bush’’ approach.

Having spent a few minutes (only required about 4) searching him out on the Internet and reading about him and reading what he’s written in the past, he sounds just about perfect for the Liberals—an anti-Bush, perhaps even good and anti-American, leftist.  Go team.

And then I found this shocka (not):

APPOINTMENT TO THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE
INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT RESEARCH CENTRE

February 13, 2007

The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, today announced the appointment of Jocelyn Coulon to the Board of Governors of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC).

“Mr. Coulon brings to the IDRC many years of experience as a scholar and commentator on foreign and development policy,” said Minister MacKay. “Most recently his experience as Director of the Montréal campus of the Pearson Peacekeeping Centre makes him ideally suited for this position. I am certain that the IDRC will greatly benefit from Mr. Coulon’s expertise and understanding of international affairs.”

Liberals appointing liberals. It’s how we got where we are today.

UPDATE:

I wondered how long before someone would email me regarding my last line, above:  Under an hour!

“Hey – isn’t Peter a Conservative?”

“He’s a Conservative.  Yeah,”  I answered.

And then he followed up with another reply and I answered:

“Don, I don’t blame you for not getting my meaning—it’s a pretty obscure reference to the fact that the Conservatives act more like liberals than conservatives.  If I were Prime Minister and allowed to appoint people, I’d ensure that every single appointment was a solid conservative for the next —I don’t know— many years, just to begin to balance things out a little.

I like Peter MacKay, but he is a Conservative (with a capital C) in party name only.  And this appointment is exemplary.  Here’s the Conservative Foreign Affairs Minister appointing someone who is anti-Bush and adamantly opposed to the war in Afghanistan…  beauty.

Stay with me and you’ll get my references.

Joel”
