Light shined (very brightly!) on “Earth Hour” stupidity

Our annual tradition continues this year with reader Dave H sending in his yearly photo of his home lit up like a beacon, as his own special way of celebrating “Earth Hour”.

For our part, we were treated to a night out for dinner last night on the light-a-palooza Robson Street with visiting American family (who drove up in their big honkin’, er, Japanese pickup with nothing in the back), and were subjected to a happy hippy waitress coming around with tiny candles, excitedly informing us (us “guys” as all restaurant patrons are all called now) that right in the middle of our expensive dinner, they would be turning out the restaurant lights and we would all participate in their little stupidity, whether we liked it or not (she didn’t actually say that last bit!).  I muttered something about the fire marshal.  Whether or not what I muttered had anything to do with it, they only turned out the lights for about two seconds, tops.  Luckily, to make up for that, we’d left all manner of lights and TVs on at home.  I wondered to myself (over my sirloin steak, grilled over an open-flame, gas-powered char grill and served with imported veggies, and imported California wine) if they asked everybody to remain silent for a minute at 11 AM on Remembrance Day.  Or if they required all their patrons to exclaim “Thank God almighty!” on Thanksgiving.  I doubted it.  I didn’t actually bring it up over dinner because the family members are both raging liberals.  I didn’t want them to risk them calling me stupid and leaving us with the bill.  So all and all it was a good night!

Hi Joel,

It’s Earth Hour here in Ontario, and thought I’d send you photo of my contribution again this year!

Much improved from last year, I have since added 28 halogen soffit lights all around the second floor of the house; across the front, across the back and down the sides.  And for good measure, lights have also been added to the front porch and the address stone.  Of course, I didn’t do this to piss off the enviro-nuts (although that is a nice bonus), it’s good for security and, well, it just plain looks cool.

Thanks to the Home Renovation Tax Credit, I was able to save 15% of the cost of the electrical work.  Of course, you and I both know that a tax credit means I’m simply allowed to keep more of my own money.  To the Liberals out there, they probably see this tax credit as a waste of government money, not my money, which is what it is.  Well, just for tonight, I’ll let them go on thinking that.  I’ll take a bit of pleasure in knowing that some Liberals will feel that they are partially financing my little light show!

You should see the backyard with all the deck and garden lighting…  it’s really cool!  And with natural gas lines to feed the BBQ and patio heaters, I can use it all year long.

Happy Earth Hour 2010!

Dave
