Speak Up on Same-Sex Marriage Alberta

Enshrine Marriage Canada and United Mothers Launch “E-referendum’
October 11, 2005

Edmonton — To give Albertans a say on the future of marriage in Canada, Enshrine Marriage Canada (EMC) in conjunction with United Mothers, Fathers and Friends (UMFF) launched an “e-referendum’ today asking for Albertans’ views on same-sex marriage.

“Albertans finally have the opportunity to speak up in this critical debate,” said Michele Dow of United Mothers, Fathers and Friends. “They will be able to tell each other and the rest of Canada how they feel about the marriage issue by their vote in the e-referendum.”

“Polls have consistently shown that the majority of Albertans do not support the redefinition of marriage. This matter is not settled. The results of this e-referendum will send a clear message to the provincial and federal politicians of Alberta that Albertans, indeed all Canadians, have more to say about marriage,” said EMC’s Bill Gairdner. “I’m very anxious to see the results of the e-referendum. If the results are in favour of traditional marriage, as I am confident they will be, this will give Alberta’s politicians the consent from the people of Alberta to move ahead with a resolution.”

The “e-referendum’ is the first step in Alberta for EMC. EMC is dedicated to amending the Constitution of Canada to enshrine the definition of marriage as the union between one man and one woman.

Albertans wishing to participate in the e-referendum are encouraged to place their vote by going to http://www.VoteMarriage.ca and clicking “yes” or “no” to the stated question.
