State-run Via Rail to suspend service tomorrow due to Indian blockades threat

Just heard on the state-run CBC news:

State-run Via Rail will likely be forced to suspend service to Canadians tomorrow as a result of the Indian blockades (which, despite blockades being an Act of War as I understand Canada’s laws, Canada’s military is apparently ready to ignore; and police are set to “observe”; and provincial premiers have taken tough action against by writing a memo politely asking them to observe the peace).

The state-run choo-choo train company is suspending service—just in time for Canada Day long weekend holiday travel—between the huge Toronto to Montreal, and Toronto to Ottawa routes, as well as others.  That’s because they fear the Indians and their blockades.  They fear for the lives of Canadians.

But don’t worry, this isn’t terrorism.

Their press release even acknowledges a blockade taking place:

VIA Rail Canada wishes to advise passengers that its services in Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada may be impacted by a possible blockade of rail lines that could be undertaken as part of the National Day of Action on June 29, 2007.

VIA services likely to be affected (in both directions) are the following:

· Toronto-Montréal
· Toronto-Ottawa
· Montréal-Senneterre
· Montréal-Halifax (June 28th departure)
· Halifax-Montréal (June 29th departure)

While VIA has not received any official confirmation of planned actions, and in fact may not receive any advance warning regarding the extent or location of a blockade, we wish to advise passengers who need to travel on June 29th on the above noted services, so that they can make alternate transportation plans if they wish to do so.

VIA will be waiving any ticket service charges for passengers who wish to change their travel dates.

VIA and the railways over which its trains operate are monitoring the situation closely and will issue updates as more information becomes available.

VIA regrets any inconvenience this situation may cause its customers. Customers may call VIA at 888-VIA-RAIL or visit viarail.ca for further information.
