Liberal Prime Minister Paul (“we lead the world”) Martin insisted that not being part of the U.S. Ballistic Missile Defence program doesn’t mean the U.S. won’t still have to “consult” with Canada before firing rockets to defend itself or any other North American target in general.
Yeah right. Sounds like John F. Kerry’s “global test” only this one is called the “Canada test”. Here’s the rule: Don’t defend your stupid American families and your stupid nation of conservatives unless others (who have no interest in your well-being and may in fact wish the worst for you) give you the OK to do so.
Here’s the stupid Paul (“we lead the world”) Martin quote of the day: “…you don’t intrude on a sovereign nation’s airspace without seeking permission.” Actually, Mr. Prime Minister, you do, if it means saving countless thousands of your countrymen’s lives.
But Liberals don’t have a culture of life, they have a culture of abject stupidity in international affairs, self-importance, and dependency.
Paul Martin insists U.S. must consult Canada before firing missiles
OTTAWA (CP) – Prime Minister Paul Martin is insisting that United States seek permission before firing any missiles over Canada.
The insistence came Friday in response to warnings that Canada has abdicated part of its sovereignty by refusing to take part in the U.S. missile-defence project.
The top American envoy to Canada – Paul Cellucci – says Canada would be “outside of the room” while the U.S. decided whether to fire at incoming missiles.
But Martin said Friday: “We would expect to be consulted.
“This is our airspace, we’re a sovereign nation and you don’t intrude on a sovereign nation’s airspace without seeking permission.”
Martin repeated Friday that Canada reaffirmed its sovereignty this week with a $12.8-billion investment over five years to help rebuild the military.
The U.S. says Canada has abdicated its say over how a potential missile attack would be thwarted.
“We will deploy. We will defend North America,” said Cellucci, the U.S. ambassador to Canada.
“We simply cannot understand why Canada would in effect give up its sovereignty – its seat at the table – to decide what to do about a missile that might be coming towards Canada.”
Canadians might not worry about being targets of a missile launch but, Cellucci noted, anything fired at the United States could very well pass over its northern neighbour.
“I personally don’t think it’s in Canada’s sovereign interest to be outside of the room when a decision is made about a missile that might be incoming towards Canada,” the ambassador has said.
Canadians better hope the Americans don’t consult, as Greg Weston said in his editorial today.
