Wisdom (—and pro-active Canadianism—) from the roots - #6329

Hey good traditional Canadians!  One PTBC reader named Paul has a suggestion which was contained in an email he sent me this morning:  In order to protect those sensitive liberal secular-progressives who are bizarrely offended by, scared of, or find that it’s contrary to the agenda they strive to advance through their atheist religion and Fabian socialism—to merely say “Merry Christmas”, don’t visit their stores during this Christmas shopping season.  That way you won’t risk offending them with all your crazy vocal, jovial, heartfelt traditional, truly Canadian “Merry Christmas”-wishing which you find yourself blurting out loud just willy-nilly to perfect strangers at this time of the year, offending all manner of Godless liberal-left zealots.  Protect them from your outrageous albeit pure, altruistic, traditional Canadian behavior which they seem to so abhor!

It’s compassionate conservatism!

Hi,

I was recently in an Office Depot in Edmonton (Mayfield Common) when I noticed there was not a single Merry Christmas sign. There were lots of advertising with Christmas like gifts and signs but all of them said Happy Holidays and Seasons Greetings.

I spoke with the manager and she informed me that no, they would not be saying “Merry Christmas” verbally or in written advertising. She told me that their employees would be offended if they had to say “Merry Christmas”. She told me that it was about making her employees feeling comfortable.

I asked if she felt that way about her customers and she repeated that it was about making her employees feel comfortable. When I asked how she knew what her employees felt, she told me they had taken a poll and that is what the employees had informed her. And that, they had to also make sure they did not want to offend any minorities that shop in her store.

I told her I was quite surprised that every employee in her store would be offended by saying Merry Christmas. She told me that not every person had said that just the majority.

I then asked her if she was not concerned she was offending the minority of employees who wanted the phrase “Merry Christmas” to be used, after all if we are worried about offending minorities then why not be concerned about all minorities.

To this she went back and contradicted herself and said they could not satisfy everyone and would not be saying “Merry Christmas”.

I have informed the store that if they are offended by this phrase (“Merry Christmas”) then they should not worry about people like myself offending them. I will not be there to spend my money at their store—this way I can make sure that I do not offend them.

I have tried placing calls to the area manager and I was not able to speak with him. (This was due to timing, not choice).

Merry Christmas

And merry Christmas to you, my friend! Happy shopping at the places in our FAME list!  (And Office Depot is now duly added to our SHAME list.

Meanwhile, another reader named Isobel sent an email informing me:

Trinity Western University has a great Christmas program for free as do Langley City and Langley Township.

Lots of other stuff happening from Christmas parades to Carol concerts, great fun for families and everyone.

So Langley City and the Township of Langley get to be the next cities added to the FAME side of our list!  And Trinity Western University—a non-state-run university—gets to be the first academic institution.  I might have guess they’d be the first!

For more information on our ProudToBeCanadian.ca Christmas List of Shame and Fame, see the list at the right side of our blog and columnist sections, and refer to some of the blog and forum entries alluded to there as well.
